Find Ancestors

Cannot find possibly two marriages of George Thompson b1835, Lincolnshire. His first marriage? and only? child seems to be Catherine Dennis Thompson b 1862. (Named after her grandmother Catharine Dennis Green b1788). His second marriage to Elizabeth Ann Douglas produced Elizabeth Ann in 1868?, Lily D in 1872? Martha Ann in 1876? Refered to by the family as "half sisters" to the later Beatrice Douglas b 1882? (In the 1851 census Elizabeth Ann Douglas seems to be the daughter of Andrew Ennis Douglas, born Scotland in 1787, and served on Nelson's ship during the Battle of Trafalgar in 1804, later becoming a surgeon from 1812).

There's no birth registered of a Catherine Dennis Thompson, actually.

- I'm getting the feeling none of this happened in England; that marriage didn't ...

Can you reproduce some of the records you're talking about so we don't have to go hunting for them?

so you think that Elizabeth was married previously, and that Elizabeth Ann b. 1868 was the daughter of the first marriage

then that she married George Thompson. and Lilly and Martha were the children of that marriage

and Beatrice was the only child of George and Elizabeth



that would explain the reference to half-sisters

I think some certificates are the only way to sort it all out!

If they traded one Elizabeth Ann Thompson (daughter/sister) for another (daughter-in-law/wife), this could be the former:

He HAS to buy the birth certificates for all the girls to determine their parentage

He HAS to buy the marriage certificate for George and Elizabeth, to determine whether Elizabeth was a widow at the time of the marriage, nad her maiden name if so


If he desires, he HAS to buy the marriage certificate for William and Elizabeth.



There is no other way of determining the correct names of mothers and fathers!!

"Catherine Donnis Thompson" in 1871 -- it definitely looks like Dennis there, for what that's worth. ;)

Was Donna a name in the mid-1800s? (On a quick search, there are 3 dozen or so Donnas born 5 yrs either side of 1871.)

Checking the GRO index at Ancestry ... urgh, it's typed, which I think is a transcription of the original handwritten index. So only the certificate will say! I wouldn't be surprised if "Donna" is a mistranscription of Dennis, though.

could well be ...... but that is the name on the birth registration, so Catherine Donna Thompson is the name that Terence will have to ask for.

I've looked everywhere I know ......... but the girls don't appear to have been baptised


or, more likely, the Parish Registers have not been transcribed onto the sites that I know about


I cannot find any of the marriages or any of the baotisms


there may well be a site for Lincolnshire, and someone else may know, but I don't!
