Hi Rosalind,

Above you said the family were poor but actually they were quite successful as the Mays and Bawtrees were members of the Goldsmiths Company. I am descended from the Bawtrees and my ancestors trace back from my mother to Henry Bawtree and Maria Ann Wood. Henry's father? was a William Bawtree who worked at the Bank of England as an engraver and designed 'the first banknote', Probably not completely true but he did design/engrave banknotes which could not be fraudulently reproduced and there are some examples on the internet.

Henry Bawtree died quite young and Maria Wood married again but for some reason her Bawtree children did not do quite so well, becoming fruitiers in London markets, rather than bankers like most of Henry's siblings.

I have a list of 25 Bawtrees belonging to the Goldsmith Co.,(and a couple joined the Carpenters? Co.,) and would suggest it would be worth you looking at such records for the Mays. There are lots of Richard Mays but these records may help you decide which is your line.

from Merryl.

Hi there,
Thank you all so much. That is wonderful. I am off the net just now except for this small laptop, which is difficult for me to see. I will add it to my tree as soon as I can. There are two other people with hot matches to the May and Bawtree families now, so we will all benefit. Very grateful. Ros. :-)
