HB40

No need to write it all down, just copy and paste it into notepad or word and then print it off or save it on your computer.

So, Happy Bunney, are you getting the marriage cert or not? Not a lot we can do without it.

Have you contacted the graveyard to see who initiated the burials? Might be an idea, to prove a relative.

All manner of name changes occur. So my ancester who was born John Joseph died and was buried as Joseph Alfred, and known as Alf all his life.

My great aunt Margaret Ann was always known as Annie, and the headstone on her grave has the name Annie.

Meant to say, HB40 -- with the correct name on the gravestone and death record -- if the family knew his "real" name was John even though he called himself William, they would have registered his death that way and put it on his gravestone, probably.

JaneyCanuck Report 11 Mar 2011 23:25

Oh my, quelle thread.

"SUSAN LOUISA = JOHN THOMAS
SUSAN LOUISE = WILLIAM THOMAS"

The problem here is that there is no such thing as Susan Louisa Shirley + John Thomas York.

And there's no such person otherwise as Susan LouisE Shirley.

Hanging one's hat on the difference between Louisa and Louise is very risky.

Especially because in the years after 1900, I've seen how many women "updated" their names. One grandmother on this board had married as "Kathleen Marian". I found she was born as "Kate Mary". ;) My grandmother was known for decades in Canada as "Lilian". She told us when she was in her 80s that her real name was Lily. Her husband thought that was "common".

Maybe "Louise" was more modern than "Louisa". It could also be a mere clerical error for the marriage -- the registrar wrote it down wrong, it got copied wrong ...

HB40, you are not going to get any farthe runless you get the William Thomas York + Susan Louise Shirley marriage certificate and the Susan Louisa Shirley birth certificate.

If they don't match, we have nothing but an amazing coincidence.

If they do, you will have a little mystery about John/William's name.

It would be interesting to see what name is on his children's birth certificates.

It just isn't so hard to believe that he called himself by a name other than his "real" name. It might have just been personal preference, it might have been something more complicated. (My great-grandfather kept his given names but changed his surname because he had deserted instead of getting sent to India. My grandfather kept his surname but changed his given names because he was kicked out of the military at age 16 and wanted to join up again.) People's names varied for all sorts of reasons.

The people who have been answering you know what they're talking about! I'd take their advice if I were you.
