Find Ancestors

I'm trying to trace my great-grandfather George Hainsworth, born c.1870 in the Bradford/Leeds area. Husband of Ada (nee Sunderland), father of Norman, Clarice, Eva, Elizabeth and Mildred Alice. He worked as a printing machine fitter. I am baffled by the fact that he does not appear in birth, marriage or census records - by 1911 Ada was a widow.

He was probably born a bit before 1870 I would think.

If you buy the marriage certificate it will give you his father's name which will help finding him in the census records.

It's odd that Ada is described as a widow in the 1901 census when her youngest child, Eva Hainsworth, was born in 1903. I've trawled through the death records from the last quarter of 1897 (my grandmother Mildred was born on 20/8/1898) to 1911, and the only George Hainsworth of anything like the correct age died in the first quarter of 1907 at 49 (Wharfedale 9a 122).

Julie, just a point to bear in mind - sometimes in those days if a couple separated (divorce wasn't usually an option) a women would sometimes describe herself as a widow.

I now have a copy of George and Ada's marriage certificate. The wedding took place on 7/5/1887, and as I expected George's father is given as John Hainsworth, machine fitter. Unfortunately the certificate has thrown up another mystery: I was under the assumption that Ada was the daughter of James Sunderland, but on the certificate his name is given as JOHN Hainsworth (deceased), warp dresser. Yet one of the witnesses was Miranda Sunderland, who I thought had the same parents as Ada - James and Ann!
