Eaj123 Report 14 Mar 2011 01:00

Hi - Could somebody please help. I am trying to find when Arthur Garrard, who was born about 1880 in Donhead St Andrew Wiltshire, died.

I think his parents were James and Phoebe.

He married Kate Pearce in 1901.

Marriages Jun 1901
Garrad Arthur Hendon 3a 432
PEARCE Kate Hendon 3a 432

In 1911 Kate married Frederick Charles Jordan.

MARRIAGES JUN 1911
Garrad Kate Southwark 1d 257
Jordan Frederick C Southwark 1d 257

So somewhere in between 1901 and 1911 Arthur Garrard died and I can't find him.

Other eyes could be sharper than mine.

Many thanks

Liz

His name seems to be Garrad, but you've spelled it Garrard twice in your opening post, and posted on the Garrard surname board - ?

Just in case it was a common mistake, this person was in the Imperial Yeomanry in the Anglo-Boer war:

Garrard, Arthur 40320, Trooper* 38th Bn. I.Y.

http://www.britishmedals.us/files/iyg.htm

Accurate birth info, for ref:

Births Mar 1880
Garrad Arthur Tisbury 5a 222

Kate hadn't really been married 6 years in 1911 -- possibly it was her existing marriage to Arthur that prevented her marrying earlier, and he died?

Eaj123

Eaj123 Report 14 Mar 2011 08:41

Kate married in 1911 for the second time. The 1911 census gave her as being married 6 years but perhaps that was as a common law wife?

She had no children apparently - the child in the census was her husband's from his previous marriage. A bit of a mixup on the census I think.

Arthur Garrad was his correct name but spellings change a lot in the records. And I think that was a typo.

I'll check the Boer war records to see if there's a clue to Arthur - can't find anything else.

Sorry to take a while to answer - cooking going on in Australia!

Thanks

Liz

Many thanks for that. If he arrived after the Boer War he probably survived it so manybe not him - unless he decided to stay there!

Divorce was out of the question for the non rich class but don't know how long people had to disappear for them to be declared dead?

Thanks again

That is definately the marriage of Kate and Arthur. Arthur's father was a butler but it looks as though Arthur didn't follow in his footsteps.

I think an Ironmonger had a shop didn't he? Not like a blacksmith?

Many thanks

For "declared dead" -- it wasn't actually a declaration. After seven years without contact and no information, a spouse was entitled to presume the person was dead and consider themself free to marry again. The seven years provided a defence against any bigamy charge.

I had wondered about that possibility. 1911 would put his last known existence at 1904, if that had been the case.

I don't know how common this was, for instance how familar people were with the rule, or even how it was implemented. When I read up on a bit a little while ago, it sounded like someone could just say to themself: well, I'll consider him/her dead, time to get married again! ;)

HI LK,

I spotted the other census returns........... but I can't see this Arthur before the 1901 census......... so I think it maybe him.

If he lied about his year of birth and birth place what else is he covering up.... just a thought.
