yes found that too.................but where was the mother in 1891 when the children were in the workhouse or the father for that matter!

Seems very strange!

Potty

Potty Report 26 Mar 2011 12:32

In 1891 the Susannah and Maria are in Salford Workhouse.

In 1901 they are living with their mother and Josiah Davenport.

Suzanne

Suzanne Report 26 Mar 2011 12:31

Jax,

I noticed that too.

So far have the names of Maria, Susannah, Elizabeth. Annie and Ruth.

Does she mean Josiah Harris and Sarah Leach are still alive in 1911 but not living with her?

And by 1911 Ruth had died, age 1. so there must be another child somewhere still alive that we havent found!

Potty,

Susannah did marry.............another certificate I think needs ordering!

Will check out the info on that and if it confirms Thomas Harris as her father can then order the marriage certificate for her father.

Cheers
Suzanne

I see from the 1911 census Maria said she had 12 children 7 living and 5 died

Another good site for Lancashire is lancsbmd:
http://www.lancashirebmd.org.uk/

This is the marriage jax found from that site:

Lancashire Marriage indexes for the years: 1889
Surname Forename(s) Surname Forename(s) Church / Register Office Registers At Reference
HARRIS Thomas LEACH Maria Salford St Bartholomew Salford

Usually on that site, if a woman has been married before it gives her maiden name and her previous married name.

Did Susannah marry? Her marriage cert should give her father's name and occupation which would help to confirm any other findings.

Maria's father wasn't necessarily alive when she married; just because he is mentioned doesn't mean he was present at the wedding or that he was still alive.

great stuff Jax and Potty.................what skeletons have you uncovered there!

Potty

Potty Report 26 Mar 2011 11:55

Checking the image for the 1881 that Rose posted, Maria is shown as married, as is the son Charles; Sarah Leech is shown as daughter and, given their ages, probably not John and Elizabeth's.

There is death for for a Timothy Leach in 1879:

Deaths Dec 1879 (99%)
Leach Timothy 20 Bury 8c 349

Thanks Potty,

Any idea why she would be adopted by the lewis family if at 18 when she married, her father was still alive?

Think I will get Susannah's birth certificate first before I pin to much hope on Maria Lewis......however there cant be many Maria's from Africa living in Manchester in 1881............so maybe this is the right line of enquiry.

Thanks for web site address for lancs-ops

Always a good idea to check Lancashire births and marriages on lancs-opc site:

http://www.lan-opc.org.uk/

Here is the Leach/White marriage giving father's names:

Maria Eveline White - (X), 18 Reeler Spinster of 7 Susan St.
Groom's Father: Timothy Leach, Plumber
Bride's Father: James White, Officer
Witness: William Dale; Martha Dale
Married by Banns by: A. Brooke Clarke Rector

Rose.

I really like your input...............it would be fascinating if she was adopted.

I dont know how i could find out if this is the correct person though or if her real surname was White when she married Timothy Leach. If it was do you have any idea why they might have put Lewis on the census and not her married name?

Its getting confusing and I've only just looked at this branch.

Thanks for all you help, Suzanne

I think that Jax means that you will find out the father's name if he is mentioned on the birth certificate. If Susannah's mother was married then the father should be named on the certificate. However if she wasn't married then the father's name may not be added to the certificate if the child was illegitimate.

Sylvia,

Thanks for the info on the siblings. Its quite strange dont you think that she has a child called Josiah and that is the name of the man she is housekeeping for?

I cant seem to find her with Susannah's father on any census though or indeed a marriage to him.

Thanks for you help perhaps a visit to the church records might be needed.
