I have a family mystery that I need some help with please! My great grandfather, Arthur had 4 children with Isabella Saunders (b 1888) between 1909 and 1922. Isabella already had a son illegimately. The 4 children by Arthur were named Norton. All the children were born in Pancras, London. The birth certificates suggest that he married Isabella as she uses his name, but I can find no record of a marriage. He and Isabella do not appear on 1911 census. In 1901 Isabella was living with her parents. Between 1909 and 1922 the family were living at 8 Exmouth St, St Pancras. Arthur and Isabella seperated sometime between 1922 and 1927 when she married Richard Mantell (Isabella is recorded as a spinster). The Norton sons stayed in touch with Arthur as they grew up but the last time he was seen was just before WW2 (live account from the last surviving son). I found a war death of an Arthur Edward Norton but he was too young. On the birth certificate of the 3rd child James Edward Norton in 1917, Arthur Edward is recorded as being in the 8th Kings Royal Rifles which may be the only place that there is a record of him!!....at the time of other births he was a window cleaner and carman. Would be grateful for any advice on what to do next! |

Probably not a great deal of help but I believe that the Kings Royal Rifles were also known as the Rifle Brigade: |

In 1911 there were three families recorded as living at 8 Exmouth St, St Pancras. No Norton's amongst them I'm afraid. |

If Isabella married as a spinster, it's unlikely she and Arthur were married. Bigamy happened, but not all that often. And if she had been widowed, it would have been a simple matter to say so when she remarried. |

Wow...I didnt know that you can look at census by address!! I clearly have a lot to learn! I need to check the address that was on birth certificate for child born in 1909 as I may have assumed at 8 Exmouth St as children born in 1917, 1920 and 1922 were. I didnt get the first birth certificate from GRO as I assumed I had all the details I needed ....never assume anything I an sure is the advice you will give me!! |

Can you also give us Isabella's details, per the 1901 census or otherwise -- place of birth, parents' names ... |

I'm not having any luck finding a marriage between an Edward Saunders and a Jessie (which could always be a transcription problem), or finding them in 1911 either. |
