I keep wondering (and I kept asking) whether Julia had found either William Sr or Eliza J in 1891 ...


They're a puzzle, so I've poked around some more, and the best I can come up with is that William Sr is this one in 1911:

In 1901, our William Sr was born in Poplar 1848 and a constable (dock).

And this is the best match I can find in 1891:

Looked promising but the only son I can see him having was an Edwin in 1891

I know, jax -- I was just trying to answer the query. ;)

It seems to be the only available marriage for the couple in the 1901 census ... and as I said, the Eliza J Pearce in 1901 matches the Eliza J Rivers in earlier censuses.

The Eliza J in 1901 matches on all points with the Rivers I found in 1871 and 1881 - date and place of birth, father's name on the marriage record.

I don't see this one in 1891 or a death up to 1901.


The James Rivers in Hammersmith in 1891 was registered in Fulham in Q1 1889.


I might suspect that William was born to Eliza before her marriage and was called William after that if his stepfather fully "adopted" him, possibly.

I'd still like to know where the name for Eliza Jane Rivers came from?
