Simon, whoever registered the death would possibly not have known his precise age.

As you know lack of literacy prevents records being completely accurate.

Simon

Simon Report 8 Apr 2011 13:27

I am the direct great, great, great, great, great grandson on my grandfathers side

Simon

Simon Report 8 Apr 2011 13:31

The most likely wife of James is Mary Landsbrough.

If so, then I need to find her birth and death date

Simon

Simon Report 8 Apr 2011 20:30

I am researching a potential candidate known as Joseph Steel, born in 1751 in Dalston Cumberland

He could be Joseph's father, but I need to cross reference with any children of Joseph 1751

thanks

Simon
I'm confused.........

You say you don't know the children of James, but later you say he is a direct ancestor.
What is the name of his child who you descend from?

Gwyn

Simon Report 9 Apr 2011 00:43

Very sorry for the confusion,

James is the elder brother of my great great great great great grandfather, Joseph Steel, born in Stapleton

Joseph's son, Walter Steel, born 1837 is my great great great great grandfather, then his son Walter Steel, born 1873

hope this clear things up

In response to your other thread, from familysearch these are all the children born to William Steele and Eleanor :

1. HENRY STEELE - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Male Christening: 13 JUL 1793 Haile, Cumberland, England

2. JOSEPH STEELE - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Male Christening: 11 MAR 1787 Haile, Cumberland, England

3. DANIEL STEEL - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Male Christening: 27 DEC 1796 Haile, Cumberland, England

4. JOSHUA STEEL - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Male Christening: 13 AUG 1798 Haile, Cumberland, England

5. WILLIAM STEELE - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Male Christening: 17 JAN 1784 Haile, Cumberland, England

6. HANNAH STEEL - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Female Christening: 04 APR 1790 Haile, Cumberland, England

Not sure how close Haile is to Stapleton.

Tips on finding siblings on familysearch:

If you have found a baptism for one child, click on the batch number at the bottom of the record, then enter the parents in the relevant boxes.

To search for children when you know the parents' names:

enter the father's names and the mother's first name in the relevant boxes; do not enter anything in any of the other boxes except to select the region.

Thank you for the information, I apologise for earlier.

I have noticed however that a Joseph Steel, born in 1797 is not mentioned on here, does that mean William and Eleanor are not the parents? Strange because in an earlier thread, it said Joseph had a brother born in Haile named Joshua

Funny, I can see both Joseph and Joshua on the list that Potty posted.

So, just to clear things up, Joshua, born in 1789 is the elder brother of Joseph, and if this is correct, then William and Eleanor are Josephs parents
