Was your grandmother's maiden surname IRWIN?

For nearly 20 years have tried to find grandfather named William Hotchon. Supposedly married to grandmother Barbara Alice. Her married name was Hotchon. She later married a second husband Fred Eales in 1918. My father was born in 1915. So he died in the intervening period. I have looked on all English and Scottish census lists. Even U.S. lists. It's an unusual and rare surname. Can anyone suggest where to look. I suspect he didn't exist which means his name may never be known. Thanks in antipation.
