Thanks Susan, I'm pretty sure that is my Joseph, Will check my finances and see if I can buy his birth certificate xxx All the research I've done points to him being born around June 1848. I do have some notes, but since we've recently moved I can't put my hands on them. I do think this is the right person though.

Thanks Dea, I appreciate the efforts you have made for me xxx
Pam, I think you may be onto something! Given that names were often repeated generation after generation, there are a lot of similarities with the info from 1861. As for Annie Louisa, I have her birth as Lancashire, England abt 0ct 1868 and baptism Jan 1869 (neither confirmed) Perhaps she was with grandparents/other family for a little while? At least it gives me a point of reference. Thank you very much! As I stated in an earlier post, my father died recently and there is only his sister left (that I know of) here in Australia. She doesn't know very much about her paternal family but would like to. :)
Thanks again everyone xxx

Well after a few hours of trawling through free BMD uk, and GR searches, I'm still clueless. Given that Joseph's father is listed as James Rogerson, shoe maker I have found a couple of possibles for James but not sure at all. I haven't been able to find a marriage or death for James either. Nor can I confirm Joseph's birth. I think I may have to order what I think is Joseph's birth certificate. Any ideas would be gratefully received. I believe I am suffering family researcher block! lol

Hello everyone! Joseph and Jane's marriage certificate has arrived. The marriage was solemnized at the Register Office in the District of Blackburn, County of Lancaster on the 21st of April, 1868 Joseph Rogerson to Jane Blake. Both have their ages listed as 21 years, he a batchelor, she, spnister. Both have Cotton ?sewer, Loom weaver listed as their profession. Joseph's father is listed as James Rogerson, Shoe Maker and Jane's father is listed as Thomas Blake,?Joiner. I'm having some trouble deciphering some of the words as you can see :)
The marriage was "solemnized between us, Joseph Rogerson and the mark of Jane Blake" in the presence of: Thomas Gillott and the mark of Eliza Gillott. The marriage was certified by one Joseph ?Leaver....Registrar of......

Thanks Dea. A 'possible' birth is more than I had before, at least it gives me a reference point. I'm thinking that both you and susan have hit on the same family. Now I'll have to work to prove they are (or aren't) mine :)
I'm in Australia. It is currently Sunday, 1.16pm here.
Thank you all again, the effort you have gone to for me is much appreciated.
I have just ordered Joseph and Jane's marriage certificate. Hopefully it will be able to confirm some things and may give me new info XXXX

Dea Report 16 Apr 2011 13:35

I don't know where you are Marianne but here in the U.K. it is 1.35pm on Saturday?

The only birth I can come up with which is a 'possible' is this one and if Susan has posted the correct family above for 1851, there is also a match for sister Jane in the same area:

Lancashire Birth indexes for the years: 1848 ????????
Surname Forename(s) Sub-District Registers At Mother's Maiden Name Reference
ROGERSON (boy) Ancoats Manchester ANC/39/16

Lancashire Birth indexes for the years: 1844 ????
ROGERSON Jane Ancoats Manchester ANC/23/64

I will see if I can find anything else.........

Thanks to all for the help you have given so far. I am off to sort dinner for the family, will check back later. My father passed away just last month, and I only have his sister left from that generation. All my grandparents are gone as are most of my aunts and uncles, so I don't have the option of talking to any of them.

Marianne Report 16 Apr 2011 08:08

I agree with you there Dea, I just had another look at my copy and I think she is Mary Jane. No wonder I haven't been able to find references for Margaret! It's interesting that in the list of Baptisms Rebecca isn't there. She was 4yrs old in 1881 so should have come between George and Walter. This swapping of first and second names (and sometimes nicknames) does my head in sometimes! :)
