I think the John found prior to the marriage I posted born 1862 is the same person as the John after the marriage I posted born 1860. I think he's tried to make himself older because his wife was older than him.

There is no John born 1860 in Tysoe before the 1891 census

Jan, I've probably made a few wrong assumptions through lack of info. Another source (a member of the extendeed Hancox family) has given me this
John Hancox born Tysoe baptised 05/04/1862 occupation mason (his father James was a mason)
1891 census his children George 13 and Lucy 10 (I somehow doubt this as he would have been 16 when George was born, possible but unlikely. George is in the 1881 census aged 3 living at James's and described as Grandson). Wife/mother of children not mentioned.

You must have got back to him somehow though? Do you have any other info at all?

Shepherd matches stepsons surname in 1891. 1911 census says married 26 yrs = c1885

You could be right there, maybe I was wrong about the John Hancox in Wallasey, the trouble is there are so many Hancoxes in Tysoe and so many with the same forename. Not being able to trace his wife's name was the stumbling-block but if ***alviegal*** is right about Mary York that would make sense.
