I wonder ..........

http://ngb.chebucto.org/Cemetery/cem-gen-prot-1910-sjw.shtml

Interments
General Protestant Cemetery
St. John's
St. John's West District

28-May Eva Moore Vail 28 years sec 11, grave 92, with cover

Could Eva maybe be Evangeline?

Aged 28 in 1910 would be the right age to have had children Muriel and Walter.

There is this burial the same year:

8-Oct Bessie Vail 12 years sec 11, grave 95

You keep dragging me back. ;)

Have a look at cemetery transcriptions at the Nfld's Grand Banks site:

http://ngb.chebucto.org/Cemetery/1dist-cem-idx.shtml

Down at the bottom you can search cemeteries for surname.

I wonder about this one:

Mt. Patricia Cemetery
(Anglican)
Bay St. George's District

Vail
Ethel M.
1891 - 1976

although that one was probably a Vail by marriage?

Here's someone who has to be related, at the Virtual War Memorial site:

There are 3 Spurrells from Nfld who died in WWI at the Virtual War Memorial site, too.

Also, search for your surnames among WWI enrolments here:

http://www.collectionscanada.gc.ca/databases/cef/001042-100.01-e.php

The papers show addresses and next of kin, and you could find relations of your people. --- No, drat, I'm wrong, those records are for the Canadian Expeditionary Force only and that doesn't cover Nfld. I'll just leave it heare so we know it's a source that's been ruled out.

Marrying five times would really be pretty unusual. According to that tree, Josephus was nearly 30 when Muriel was born. It's imaginable that he'd been married before, even twice, and married twice or three times after Evangeline. But it really would be pretty unusual.

He would have had to bury four wives before marrying the fifth. That kind of luck would be extraordinarily bad.

I'd post whatever you like on that discussion board! Note that the first time you post, your post will not appear immediately. It is pre-screened. I point this out because you have a habit of posting the same thing two or three times here, so don't keep clicking there, you woon't see your post on the board until it's been moderated. ;)

I'd just try to be really clear, and I say that because I at least have a hard time following some of what you've said here at GR.

For instance, I have not the slightest clue what this is about:

"the reason I'm asking this is because I have an Ethel Vail is also in my note she married someone called Duckett he was an American from New York and they had a child together called Muriel....... I dont know if this is a different Muriel or the same Muriel thats Josephus/Evangeline's Daughter as records show that you guys found for me"

You may have her in your notes, but nobody reading that knows how she's related to anyone else. Without a date for any of those events, I'm completely lost.

How could Muriel Duckett, daughter of Ethel Vail and Mr Duckett, be the same person as Muriel Vail, daughter of Josephus Vail and Evangeline?

Keep in mind that *you* haven't verified any of the information in that tree, for instance! I do think the first thing I would do is try to contact the people who put it together, whose names are shown with the tree, and as I said, there is an email address for the person whose site it is, who should be able to put you in touch.

Since those people obviously had no further info about Walter George Vail (it doesn't give his marriage or death), they may well be interetsed in hearing from you.

mgnv Report 28 May 2011 22:43

Sometimes it says d=died, and follows it with a date. Other times it says bd and follows it with a date. You've got to wonder where they'ld get an exact date of burial without knowing the exact dod - the records that would give this are rather limited - my guess is from a church burials register, although conceivably it could come from graveyard records or from a newspaper funeral notice.

If I go 10km N, up the road from LIC, the road crosses the peninsular and meets the road on the Trinity Bay side. Old Pelican is more or less where they meet.

Margaret Report 28 May 2011 18:38

Thank you.....this document is a little confusing it says b so far down then go's on to say bapt and some of the document says dc and in some parts it says d I'll just have to put it in my tree as best as I can xx

mgnv

mgnv Report 28 May 2011 18:03

I normally use b for birth and bp for baptism, but you can't rely on everyone being so careful.
dc=death certificate would be my guess
bd=buried

In this thread and the other we've given Peggy the Nfld's Grand Banks site with many vital records and censuses

http://ngb.chebucto.org/

and I think that's where she's searching. It's a tedious process -- and the records there aren't complete, of course.

Peggy, have you thought of putting messages on the message board there?

http://ngb.chebucto.org/phpBB/

If you do, remember to be as clear about what you know, and what you're looking for, as possible! ;)

You need to take the checkmark off the post on page 1 that you have marked as answered.

"Mark as answered" means that your questions have been answered -- not that you have answered that question. It makes it look like nobody needs to look at your message anymore because it's been asnwered.

FYI - NL BMDs
In Newfoundland, records date from 1892 and are in the custody of:

Vital Statistics [www.gs.gov.nl.ca/gs/vs/]
Government Service Centre
Department of Government Services and Lands
5 Mews Place
PO Box 8700

For earlier years, the only source is church records, which are numerous for the period from 1860 to 1891, with a few returns as early as the 1820s. The Maritime History Archive has published Births, Deaths & Marriages in Newfoundland Newspapers, 1810 - 1890 on CD-Rom with more than 40,000 entries for births, deaths and marriages transcribed from 43 Newfoundland newspapers, 1810-1890. Inquiries concerning records prior to 1892 should be addressed to the Provincial Archives of Newfoundland and Labrador.
