Find Ancestors

Hi I'm hoping to find further information regarding Samuel Pritchard/Prichard census/marriage pre 1871 which was when he died, leaving his wife and a 2yr old daughter Ellen/Helen.

He was born in 1832 in Ford, Shropshire, died 1871 aged 39. He married 'Betsey' born 1842 Oxton, Cheshire. So far no luck.

Her son is my great grandfather Thomas Pritchard Owen born west derby, lancs 1888, however what has become clear is that his mother was unmarried at the time of his birth, so have searched under thomas pritchard, he doesn't appear as Thomas Pritchard Owen until 1901, however I wonder where he was while she was off visiting on census day 1891?

Its just the case of fitting a further piece of the jigsaw to a man I never met, that fought in ww1, my grandmother only saw him once on his return from the war 3days later he was dead!

Well it sounds as if the man she later married was the father of her son and she gave him the father's surname as his second name. Perhaps after she married him the son took his surname. Would he then be Thomas Owen Pritchard Owen?

Edit: But, oops, she didn't marry until 1914?

Looks like I'm gonna have an expensive weekend at the GRO.lol.

I'm gonna go with Thomas Pritchard, and Thomas Pritchard Owen, one of thems gonna come up Trumps, but he definately wasn't Thomas Owen Pritchard.

hopefully then, I'll have a more accurate chance of finding him in 1891.

his mother helen/ellen Pritchard, married Arthur H Owen shortly before he enlisted in 1914. Arthur was 20+yrs her senior.

This is confusing! You say he turns up on the 1901 census as Thomas Pritchard Owen but his parents didn't marry until 1914.

Oh, I see, on the 1901 census Arthur & Helen are living as man & wife.
Although on th census he's Arthur H. Owen and the 1914 marriage is Arthur W.S. Owen.

by 1901 ellen and Arthur were living together and had further offspring all bearing Arthurs surname, I understand its confusing, tell me I had a hard time getting anywhere with him.

I do know of a couple that had 12 children out of wedlock and eventually married when the youngest was 10, all were registered with his surname!!

However until I get a birth Cert I won't know if Thomas was truly his or another mans.

They do make it confusing for you, don't they? I see on the 1891 census Arthur H. is 48 but in 1901 he's 50 whereas Ellen/Helen went from 22 to 32.
I see also that Arthur was married in 1891. Guess that's why they waited so long to marry, probably had to wait for first wife to die?

I don't understand why he can't be Thomas Owen Pritchard born July West Derby.
If Ellen was unmarried it seems likely her son's middle name would be the fathers.
He died 28.2.1919 age 30 so that also fits with birth of July 1888.

Where was Ellen in 1891.
Was the reason Ellen and Arther didn't marry as his previous wife if he had one may have still been alive.

Found her in 1891 now.
1891 Knutsford Cheshire a visitor and single,at same address Arthur H Owen born Welspool @ 1843 married and he was a Coachman /Domestic as he was in 1901.
