yes the 1911 Frederick Johnson that Rose found is my relative & he gives his birthplace as Lincoln, Louth. All the other details match up, wife's place of birth, children's ages and my grandad's DOB & place of birth. Why he used frederick instead of his name George I don't know, but then my grandad's name was also George Frederick but he was always called Fred.

Earlswood is near Redhill in Surrey.

The Fred Johnson born Louth that you found in 1911 can't be your George Frederick as it states he is single ( when you know he married in 1906) and his age is nowhere near.

JOHNSON, Fred Grandson -Single M -15- 1896 Errand Boy LOUTH

You need to see the details of the 1911 which Rose has posted for the Frederick ( with wife Elizabeth) aged 24. to see where he gives as his birthplace
Hendon is where he was living, not where he was born.

I think that this is him, born lincoln, louth. He used to go by the name Fred apparently although his name was George frederick.
His address on the marriage certificate was 2 hollis row, earlswood (which I think is in middlesex)
presumably i would need to find his birth record and then order a certificate and see what details are entered for his parents ?

He's not listed as Fred in 1911, he's listed as Frederick c1887 if it's the one in Hendon.

George Frederick Johnson married Elizabeth Mervin 16 April 1906. He was 20 & she was 19. His father was William Richard Johnson, foreman. At the time they both lived at 2 Hollis Row, Earlswood. I know quite a bit about Elizabeth so that side is fine. The marriage certificate was witnessed by William Richard Johnson & Edith Johnson.
I have found George on the 1911 census under the name of 'Fred' Johnson and his place of birth is listed on the census as Lincoln.

Can't see a birth in Louth for George Frederick Johnson.
Your opening post gives his DOB as 1888. Where did you get that from?

What occupations did it give for George and his father on the marriage cert please ?

Karen

Karen Report 1 Jun 2011 18:20

well could be - but on the marriage certificate it doesn't state that william richard johnson was deceased - it normally does if they aere doesn't it ?

Mike * Report 1 Jun 2011 18:14

Was the William. Johnson who witnessed the marriage certificate definately the father?
It could have been the groom's brother or cousin perhaps. (especially as you can't find him in 1901)

Karen Report 1 Jun 2011 18:10

sorry - can add that on george frederick johnson's marriage certificate he put his age as 20 (16 April 1906) so he would have been born about 1886.

Karen Report 1 Jun 2011 18:08

I know that William Richard Johnson he was alive in 1906 as he signed my great grandad's marriage certificate - but I haven't been able to identify him on any 1901 or 1911 census. My great grandfather George Frederick Johnson, is on the 1911 census as Fred Johnson and states that he was born in Louth, Lincoln, but I haven't been able to establish much more than that - i/e don;t know his mother's name or exact DOB.Also he may have been registered under the name of Kidd ???? sorry am quite new to all this. I think that William Richard Johnson may have been death registered under his original name of Kidd but again not sure only hearsay.

You must know more as you are descended from him. One of his children must be your great grandfather/mother.

I assume George Frederick Johnson is your great grandfather so where was he born and who was his mother?
