Do you have your grandfather's birth certificate? If not, then that would seem the most important one to buy.

Cant find Henry and Jessie on the 1901 census . Bethnal Green is north of the River Thames and Camberwell is SE London. Maybe Jane was in domestic service when she met Edward. Funny though not to marry in her home church but then there doesnt appear to be family members witnesses on the marriage cert so maybe she was estranged from her family or wasnt quite 21 when she married so didnt have parental consent.

I am strongly suspecting that Jane was estranged from her family ,and the Hood family from Bethnal Green are her family.

Seems she gave Edwards mums address as where she lived when they married .

Kucinta

Kucinta Report 5 Jun 2011 13:11

Jessie Hood died in 1893 as posted in a previous entry, so she wouldn't be around in census 1901.

Death: Hood Jessie 39 Bethnal G. 1c 208a Dec 1893.

The Hoods from Bethnal Green seem to be the correct family as you say, and it would explain why Edward and Jane name their first born Jessie.

Name: Jessie Emmett
Age: 2

Estimated Birth Year: abt 1899
Relation: Daughter
Father's name: Edward Emmett
Mother's name: Jane Emmett
Gender: Female
Where born: Peckham, Surrey, England

Civil parish: Camberwell
Ecclesiastical parish: St John the Evangelist
County/Island: London
Country: England

Living in camberwell.

Given what Shirley has found to tie Jane to Ellen's address, it would seem that Edward's father is George Emmett (or John Emmett as he is named in the 1881 census)

ChristinaS Report 5 Jun 2011 13:42

Susan,

In March 1863 when George and Ellen baptised their daughter, Sarah Caroline, in Lambeth (referred to as Caroline on the 1871 census)
father is down as George Thomas Emmitt. It looks as though that was his middle name, although it's the only instance I can find of him using it.

Baptism is on London Baptisms, Ancestry.

Kucinta Report 5 Jun 2011 13:45

1891 Census says George was born c1843 Bermondsey.

At the risk of adding more confusion, could this be his baptism, and also where the 'Thomas' came from? (Lord knows why he's 'John' in 1881!)

Name: George Thomas Emmett
Record Type: Baptism
Estimated Birth Date: abt 1845
Baptism Date: 12 Jan 1845
Father's name: Thomas Emmett
Mother's name: Caroline Emmett
Parish or Poor Law Union: Bermondsey St Mary Magdalene
Borough: Southwark

Father Thomas a shoemaker

EDIT - looks Like I was still typing as Christina was posting. Baptism also explains where the 'Caroline' in George's daughter Sarah Caroline as mentioned by Christina, comes from.

George Emmett/Emmitt was a fishmonger in 1871 and also on the baptism of daughter Sarah Caroline.
