Sherrie Report 6 Aug 2012 22:03

Hi Laurence,
Thank you so much for the very useful information which has had me stumped for years!!

I was very close with my Nan and I do know when I approached the subject of who Dads Dad was she always tried to skip the conversation as though it was information she didn't want to share,I now know why!!
My Nan died aged 89 in March 2011 , unfortunately she died with a diagnosis of dementia for approx 2 years prior to her death so her memory was very poor hence why i started researching on this site.
My Dad was an only child between Geoffrey and my Nan but his name was Raymond John not 'John' as you thought but he always used the forename John.
Well what a coincidence that your Grandmother and her children moved to Norwich as we all moved to Great Yarmouth in 1975 and have all lived here ever since. My Nan never had any other children and she absolutely adored my Dad ,brought him up on her own until she remarried when Dad was 18!!! She once told me that she travelled far to apparently give him to a wealthy family when he was a baby as it was not the done thing to be a single parent them days but once getting there couldn't go through with it.!!!
Dad sadly was cruelly taken from us only last year 2011 aged 66 with lung and bone cancer only 7 months after losing our Nan,his mother!!!
I hope you can understand why now im quite excited that you have actually been in contact with information as now they are both at rest together somewhere i can now research without reserecting any unpleasant feelings or memories.
Dad was always aware that he may have half brothers or sisters out there somewhere but we never knew they would be so close!!!
Do you know if Geoffrey is still alive or any details of his parents etc? The last time i researched in depth im sure i found another marriage for him in the late 1950s but then once Dad was diognosed i gave up researching to care for him as from diognosis to his death was very poorly.
I hope to hear from you again and thanks again for getting in touch!

Regards Sherrie
:-D

Me again I m Laurence, Geeoffreys grandson.
Geoffery married my nan 1 year after he married your nan also in Hendon.
St Mary the virgin Church, Hendon Parish of Kenton.
Your nan was still married to Geoffrey , all unknown to my nan at the time,
Hence his trial for bigamy in 1947.
More to follow.
Please message me, would love to fill in the blanks etc.
:-D

Geoffrey is my Grandad. He married My Nan Iris Fox from Norwich on Dec 5 1945. He said he was 22 but he was actually 17 !
He was sent for trial for bigamy at the old Bailey in 1947.
He and my nan had 4 kids. My Nan left him in the early 1950s, she and the kids went back to Norwich and never saw him again.
Your nan never divorced from Geoffery and his marriage to my nan was consequently never legal.
My dad only found all this out in the Mid 1970s when he wasin his mid 20s.
My dad the youngest of the 4 has never set on eyes on Geoffery.
Nan is still alive she is 89.
The oldest son was called John on his birth cerficate but has been known as Alan his whole life, due I m guessing to the fact that nan found out about your nan and your dad who is also john I think.

Current law, and in 1940's probably a lot stricter:

Divorces will not be granted to couples married for less than one year.

The petition must state a reason for wanting a divorce - adultery, unreasonable behaviour, separation (two years minimum if your partner agrees to the divorce or otherwise five years) or your partner has deserted you (two years minimum).

would abandonment have needed fewer years?

whichever .......... divorce was harder to get and more expensive than nowadays.

always look in My Threads, in the Tools box to the left of the screen ....... that will show all threads you have started or on which you have posted.

We have all just duplicated all the work that was done on that previous thread.

That is why GR does not like duplicate threads .... their T&C's actually say not to do it.

I'm trying to get to that other thread to give a cross reference to this so that the people who worked on that know about this one, but I'm having trouble.

I would be curious enough to get the second marriage cert, just to see if it is him, or discount it.

I think it took 3 years for divorce then ?

Sherrie

Sherrie Report 13 Jun 2011 00:21

I have not come across any divorce papers for my Nan and Geoffrey!

Sherrie

sometimes people get information wrong when they are registering a death.

It's because people don't always tell the truth to their relations or friends ...... or possibly to the care worker who has to register the death!

People often know the birth date and month of an older person, but may not know the year ...... so make a guess. Or the person themselves might have knocked 5 or so years off their actual age, because of vanity!

I was just intrigued because that is the only death registered for a Geoffrey George Cross up to 2005. He could still be alive of course!

Then I was intrigued by that other marriage which took place one year later in Hendon.

Your Nan must have divorced him (or been divorced by him) ............. have you seen any papers?

Sherrie,

There was no need to start a new thread on this. You should have updated your old thread with the marriage cert. details.

My Nan never said how long!! Im guessing by my Dads DOB she was pregnant at the time when she married him but according to my nan he went off with somebody else and never stayed with her after my Dad was born!!

when you say your nan was not married to him for very long, what is "not very long"???

There is a marriage for a Geoffrey G Cross registered at Hendon just 1 year later in December quarter 1945 .......... the same place where the marriage to your Nan is registered!
