the 'other' one is with her mother ( grandmother ? ) Alice in 1841 but no Rose Hannah

in 1851 and 1861 there are the two
Rosanna is a lodger with a Varley couple
Rose Hannah is with her parents John and Jane in Burnley Lands

Thanks. I think you are right about Hannah being a second wife. I see that all of the children of James Long from Samuel down through Seth are the sons of Elizabeth. Also that there is a marriage between James Long and Elizabeth Barratt on 13 Dec 1824 in Otley. Later there is a marriage between a James Long and Hannah Hobson on 18 Jan 1837, a year before son James was born in 1837/1838 in Otley.

I have not been able to find the records that confirms Elizabeth Long died prior to his marriage to Hannah in 1837 or that James Long born Dec 1837 /1838 is the son of Hannah. You were certainly on the right track

that works perfectly , the two James Long marriages :-)

It was so common ... a widowed father just could not raise a brood of young children without a wife

But no Hindle Slater connection !

William - can you delete your latest posting on Seth please before people start duplicating research for you

thanks

I shall continue to search for the death of Elizabeth Barratt to confirm and also confirm that Hannah Hobson was the mother of the last Long child, James Long.

But you are right about the lack of Hindle / Slater connection. That is still baffling.

I'm wondering whether this could be her birth....many of my ancestors couldn't read or write so names were written down as they were heard and as they couldn't read or write they were none the wiser!

Apologies for going silent to one and all. A little bit of hospitalisation claimed my attention.

Have uncovered link between Hindle and Slater. Seth Long married Rose Hannah Hindle on 4 Nov 1871. Seth was a bachelor and Rose Hannah was a widow at time of marriage. Her father's name was John Slater and mother Martha.

Keen now to track details of her father John Slater and her mother Martha (unsure of maiden name). There are a few John and Marthas. Once I am sure of Martha's maiden name I can extract all of Rose Hannah's (Rosannah's) siblings with some confidence.

With regard to Seth's parents James Long & Elizabeth Barrett, I have tracked their marriage to 13/12/1824 in Otley. Elizabeth dies at some point and James remarries a Hannah Hobson on 18 Jan 1837 also in Otley. Have not been able to track death of Elizabeth as yet.

Thanks to everyone that has been of help.

Possible marriage for John & Martha?

Name: Martha Coultis
Marriage Date: 3 Mar 1829
Parish: Bradford, St Peter (Bradford Cathedral)
Spouse's Name: John Slater occ Overlooker

Note in the 1841 census John Slater's occupation was given as Worsted Overlooker

William

William Report 4 Jul 2011 10:35

I suspect this marriage to Martha Coultis is the correct one as the career of John Slater fits and the church and curate (Robert Heap) consistent with eldest child and sister of Rosannah (Rose Hannah) Nancy Slater. Would be good to track Martha and determine her earlier history and get a certificate linked to Rosannah that shows her mother's maiden name. That might all be wishful thinking.

Rosannah was located on 1841 Census aged 8 months and seems to disappear until 1871 Census when she turns up married to Seth Long. Can't find evidence of her earlier marriage but there are so many mispellings of her name it is hard to track.

Thanks for marriage information.
