Thanks, Maddie.

I'm going down the Mary Bould line first because John, James's son, has the middle name Bould.

Can't find hubby's skeletons yet - give me time!

With reference to Annie b1857 is James Newton's 2nd wife

Annie Errington Nee Ulatt married James Newton in 1899 in Newburn,Northumberland.

Maddie was right. James Newton married (1) Mary Bould and (2) Annie Errington (nee Ulatt); she's the lady born in Staffordshire..

In one night, with everyone's help, we've got back to 1811 - many thanks everyone.

From the local index at
http://www.newcastle.gov.uk/msearch.nsf/msearch?openform

1855 TAYLOR Mary
1855 NEWTON Thomas
Marriage venue - St Michael, Newburn
Register No./Entry No.
EMH1/194

1883 BOULD Mary
1883 NEWTON James
Marriage venue - St James (Benwell Parish)
Register No./Entry No.
EJA2/70

The latter doesn't match too well with 24 y in 1911.

Thanks, Maddie, for the Thomas & Mary family - James, their son is the connection.

We also discovered that James married twice:

1. Mary Bould

2. Annie Ulatt (previously married to a Mr Errington)

If you'd like a laugh (from our time distance, of course), one of the older Newton family members now recalls that they had to stop James from marrying for a third time in his 80s!

Spoil sports!

Thanks Maddie,

I note that Thomas and Mary had three married sons, one grandson (my husband's uncle) and one granddaughter living witgh them in 1911.

Rather them than me at age 76!

One very elderly, but very lucid relative of hubby probably knows more.
