Thanks Maddie,

I note that Thomas and Mary had three married sons, one grandson (my husband's uncle) and one granddaughter living witgh them in 1911.

Rather them than me at age 76!

One very elderly, but very lucid relative of hubby probably knows more.

Thanks, Maddie, for the Thomas & Mary family - James, their son is the connection.

We also discovered that James married twice:

1. Mary Bould

2. Annie Ulatt (previously married to a Mr Errington)

If you'd like a laugh (from our time distance, of course), one of the older Newton family members now recalls that they had to stop James from marrying for a third time in his 80s!

Spoil sports!

From the local index at
http://www.newcastle.gov.uk/msearch.nsf/msearch?openform

1855 TAYLOR Mary
1855 NEWTON Thomas
Marriage venue - St Michael, Newburn
Register No./Entry No.
EMH1/194

1883 BOULD Mary
1883 NEWTON James
Marriage venue - St James (Benwell Parish)
Register No./Entry No.
EJA2/70

The latter doesn't match too well with 24 y in 1911.

Maddie was right. James Newton married (1) Mary Bould and (2) Annie Errington (nee Ulatt); she's the lady born in Staffordshire..

In one night, with everyone's help, we've got back to 1811 - many thanks everyone.

Thanks, Maddie.

I'm going down the Mary Bould line first because John, James's son, has the middle name Bould.

Can't find hubby's skeletons yet - give me time!

Found John Bould Newton's birth - no mmn given; reg. Castle Ward, 1893 3Q.
Found his son (H H Newton) and daughter-in-law (E McDonald).

Still searching to be sure of Mary Ann.

JoyLouise

JoyLouise Report 24 Jun 2011 14:07

Joyce again. I've had a quick look and think Mary and Annie may be two different people because:

1901 Census: Annie age 44
1891 Census: Mary age 28

Can there really be that much different in recording ages in censuses?

I may have found the skeleton my husband never thought he had in his tree (and he thought I was the only one with skeletons).

JoyLouise

JoyLouise Report 24 Jun 2011 13:56

Thanks everyone. Thomas>James looks right.

James and Annie producing John (we thought John Boald Newton) around 1894 looks like what hubby was searching for.

We know our John B N (known as Jack) married an Ellen Holden b Lancashire and produced a son and a daughter who died in infancy (no idea of time/name) - so James and Annie look like the grandparents.

Hubby's got the gene bug, I'm afraid, so I'll have to fight for my time on the computer!

DAVY, Mary Ann view record

according to the tree james parents were thomas and mary taylor

Barry

Barry Report 24 Jun 2011 12:19

According to the GASKELL family tree on Ancestry James Newton married a Mary Ann DAVY who was born in Staffordshire, in Tynemouth Northumberland
The tree states they were married in 1979 but when one clicks onto the BMD provided for reference it states Q3 1883 ref 10b 335
Mary Ann died in 1909 in Northumberland
If the tree is correct it looks to me that Mary Ann used Mary on the 1891 census and her middle name on the 1901 census

Potty

Potty Report 24 Jun 2011 11:43

Joyce,

you really need to get some of the children's birth certs to confirm Mary/Annie's maiden name. Without that info, anything else is guesswork.
