Hi,

I am new to this board and wondered if anyone has any tips. I know my father was Leslie Arthur Dyer who died in Cambridge in 1972 when I was 4 so I don't really remember him.

Does anyone know how/where to look for such things as

His date of death and place of internment
His birth
Any relatives living or not possibly abroad

Many thanks

Helen

Name: Leslie Arthur Dyer
Birth Date: 8 Aug 1923
Date of Registration: Oct-Nov-Dec 1972
Age at Death: 49
Registration district: Cambridge
Inferred County: Cambridgeshire
Volume: 4a
Page: 650

His birth will be on freebmd.....................

http://www.freebmd.org.uk/

Search using only the initial of his second forename.............the index will show the mother's maiden name, and registration district.

Using that info, you can search for siblings...............and possibly for the marriage of his parents.

Their marriage cert will tell you their ages.....and the names of their fathers, which will allow census searches to be started...............

A quick look at freebmd suggests that he was probably an only child

Helen

Helen Report 26 Jun 2011 22:44

I can't believe how quick and helpful you have been.

The person who we have been in contact with from my fathers town of stretham has said she went to school with his sister Gillian so should not be an only child? I don't know where he is born to be honest. the neighbour thinks Gillian emigrated to America.

Any help with this would be amazing

I can't find him on freebmd-what search info do I use??

Many thanks

Oh dear, Lindsey, how utterly infuriating for you........I hadn't realised.

Helen

This is the only birth reg'n which fits the DOB quoted on the death reg'n - but that, of course, assumes that the person registering the death had the correct info

You may not realise that bmd's are collated in quarters, thus one which is recorded as 'Sep' is actually during the qtr ending Sep.....July, Aug and Sep

Births Sep 1923 (>99%)

Dyer Leslie A Palmer Erpingham 4b 110

Erpingham district is Norfolk - not a million miles from Cambridgeshire

I'm guessing - forgive me if I'm wrong - that your father and mother didn't marry, so you can't use marriage records as a check?

EDIT:

Just noticed your reference to Stretham...............was he supposed to have been born there?

Actually, if you buy the death cert, it SHOULD say where he was born...................

www.deceasedonline.com/

(have checked above website, in case of cremation in Cambridge, they have records, nothing showing)

Chris :)

edits, if your'e referring to Stretham, nr Ely, Cambs., a good chance I'd say of that birth Flick posted, or possibly a burial that way?...

Can your friend tell you anything more about Gillian?
How old she was at the time?
I have tried in vain to find a Leslie and a Gillian Dyer birth with the same Mothers maiden surname
There is a Gillian K Dyer born 1925 Jun Q Wycombe (MMS Aldridge) but her parents (Ernest H Dyer and Audrey A Aldridge ) married 1923 Dec Q Wycombe a bit too close to Leslies birth to be a possibility -also trried Leslie A Aldridge in case he was born before marriage but no joy

The Erpingham one was the son of Sydney A Dyer and Frances Palmer who married 1923 Jun Q Norwich

Hi,

I think that erpingham one is my dad. Funny, his dad was Arthur so I am wondering if he was Sydney arthur. My dad was Leslie Arthur and my brother is Adrian Arthur so I guess they used Arthur as a middle name through the generations. I have found a marriage between Leslie a dyer and Pauline j Dudley in Norwich in 1953 on here and I have a feeling he was married before, and I also have a feeling they may have had a daughter. Where could I go armed with this information?? No he didn't marry my mum you are correct!

Many thanks

Helen

Just realised Gilian of course this is my nan-she is called Frances and my middle name is Frances after her! I need to do some searching for Sydney and Frances!
