This is the marriage that jax found (from lancsbmd which ties up the partners. In some areas it give MMN for births before 1911:

ROTHERY William MILLS Sarah Bacup, St John Preston

Having said that, I see Sarah was born in Bacup which comes under haslingden, so this is a good candidate. But no way of knowing which Sarah I suspect, even if the correct William! I think you need that birth cert.

I got as far back as 1827 William Rothrie and his wife Sarah but I have now got stuck I can find William on any earlier census to trace his household info to get his father foes anyone know any ways of doing this?

There are also alot of Sarah's that I have struggled with figuring out who is who....maths isnt my strong point so working out the DOB has been a nightmare yet its very fun

Excellent thanks Jan I found a Beatrice but was a little confused if it was her as I found her death cert and her death cert said South Shields which I was born but our family didnt know she had also came to shields when my grandfather Jack did. Thanks for your help much appreciated :-)
