So sorry but I have not forgotten how every one helped me. I have not yet called the person who may be my cousin, this is not deliberate but other family needs were of more importance.

How ever I shall call, maybe tomorrow!

Bridget in wet Spain :-)

Marian,
What a good idea, there are a few people I have been in contact with on GR who live in Spain so I will try to open a new thread today.
I will be looking out to see if you use it !!I am sure you will.

I tried calling Rona Ford as I said I would do but no reply so will now try in the evening, as maybe she was out...it feels rather strange to maybe finding her, please keep your fingers crossed that this is the right person.

Think a thread for Brits in Spain is a good idea. Then we can have a mutual moan. Not that we should really because life is good here compared with England.......if you learn to live with the frustrations.
Not surprised to hear that Telefonica is the oldest phone company in the world. They still operate along the original lines.
I now have my phone/internet through BT. Only 2 drawbacks.
They rent the lines from Telefonica who can (& do) cut you off without warning if they feel so inclined & here in Menorca it hasn´t been possible for BT to supply broadband although I believe they can now. At a price no doubt. Haven´t dared ask.
Happy to keep in touch. We need all the support we can get!!!!!!

Ah Marion, at last someone who understands!

We actually have a beautiful box on the wall just for stationary but it has never been used and the People who built the house some 40 years ago simply liked having the box!

We do receive parcels etc but if we are out it has to be collected within 24 hrs...not very good if away for a few days... but as you say we get used to it. All my family and friends are contacted by email or telephone. Do you know that Spain has the oldest original telephone lines in the whole of Europe...truly amazing !!

Gifts we usual send money through the banks or give to a member of the family who visit...

We have lived here for 8 years in October, never thought that I would survive that long, but we do live in a delightful and truly Spanish area called Peniscola, NO it is not a rude word as it means Peninsula!!!

So pleased that you have settled, may be we should tarts a thread for Brits in Spain??? What do you think?

I know what you mean by pension money not lasting long. I finally retired just before my 65th birthday and the income loss in very tangible.

Stay in touch

Bridget

Happens all the time in Menorca Bridget. Also we can only get broadband through Telefonica which costs €42 per month. Not possible on a pension, so struggle on with dial up.
Same problems with the post too. Although we live in the centre of town & have a letterbox on the front door, most days we get a note saying the post couldn´t be delivered, so have to wait until next day & queue for ages to retrieve it as they are only open in the mornings. Then you have to produce your residencia & passport as proof of ID as the new residencias are not proof. Drives me mad.
My OH keeps suggesting I take out dual nationality so that I can have a proper Spanish ID card like him. He can travel to the UK without a passport whereas I need mine to be allowed back into Menorca from the mainland.
Still, it´s nice here & after 6 years I´m becoming resigned to it.

Good morning to everyone who has helped me so far. I still intend to call the person you have helped me find, but unfortunately the weather her has been appalling at times and as a result we lost both our phone and internet connection for 6 days.....it was like living in a time warp. a considerable amount of time and effort the telephone company finally arrived, tool=k all of 5 minutes to put phone back on line but 2 hrs later still no internet,,,and so it went on. Finally with the help of a Dutch friend we were able to be on line again.

Will report back during the week when I have made the call.

HI Bridget

I understand your problem as some friends od ours live in Casinos, Valencia near to Lliria. According to the computer they are about 74 miles (english calculator) from you. They have a post office box now but had to wait a long time for one to become free.

Good luck with your certificate I hope it is the right one.

I have learnt with our post never to order more that one cert at a time this way you can only lose the one. I worked this out the hard way when I ordered five to come at once and never received any of them!

Hello Wendy,
How nice to hear from someone else who lives in Spain. We will have been here for eight years in September. I live in Peniscola, midway between Barcelona and Valencia. We chose here because of the history and it is close enough to be able to visit my son and my cousin highly recommended it. The problem is that we live half way up a mountain side and the post office refuse to send letters etc to us and we cannot get a post box in the post office as they are all accounted for. We have got used to it and most correspondence is by email and letters etc go to my sister in the UK.

I shall be ordering the cert tomorrow.

Hi Bridget

I live in north Tenerife and I get my certificates sent here, there is no extra cost for them doing this. The only problem is that our postal system isn't as good as it could be and we do lose post some times.

£9.25p per cert

I would send for the death cert in 1954 Of Elizabeth R Ford in reg district Basingstoke as I think it highly likely it is her ,but that is only my personal opinion of course.

Shirley,
I never thought of that, how amiss of me. Is their anyway I could find out if she is still there?
I suppose I will have to buy the death cert of her mother and or my uncle. I cannot receive post where I live so will have it sent to my sister in Bath.
Solong since I had to buy cers cannot quite recall what I have to do?

Must go now but will be back Tomorrow.

Rona could still be alive. as not finding any death record for her up to 2006 . Maybe she was the informant in one or both of her parents death certs ,if so should give her address at that time. A free search on www.192,com comes up with 19 R Ford in Hampshire including a Basingstoke one. She may still be living in the family home.

On a tree on Ancestry it says she was age 24 on marriage...It also has her being born 1905 and the refs of the 1915 birth for Elizabeth R Saunders?????But it does not give any date of marriage except the refs..

So might she be Elizabeth Rose and not Elizabeth Rona?
