I can only think Alma must be daughter Amelia who appears in 1871 census age 4. Age is a bit wrong.

on 1901 census there are 4 unmarried daughters plus granddaughter Melinda.

I've been trying to find birth regs for the children, but it would seem the family didn't bother. No baptisms that I can see either.

Thanks Andy - that makes sense....

I think that at the birth of son William, Ann Pitcher & John Taylor were not yet married....she is living with her father, a shopkeeper and he is living with his mother, also a shopkeeper ( baker? ) & his siblings.
By 1871 - they have 5 other children......
