I am trying to find any information regarding my grandfather who left England and came to Fremantle Western Australia in 1924. He married my grandmother in Kalgoorlie, Western Australia in 1927 but the marriage ended in 1931. He lived in Sale, Victoria in 1924.

I would really like to know what happened to him after 1931 and where and when he died. Any help would be greatly appreciated in my search for my grandfather.

Did he marry again?

Australia Marriage Index, 1788-1950
about Charles A Oakley
Name: Charles A Oakley
Marriage Place: Western Australia
Registration Place: Perth, Western Australia
Registration Year: 1937
Registration Number: 2705

Do you have his parents names?

Cherilyn

Cherilyn Report 24 Jul 2011 09:23

The marriage Ginny found was actually in 1941 (same reg - 2705)

Oakley Charles A Perth 2705 M 1941 Vallance Hazel G

No death found in WA or Vic.

First wife Dorothy Grace (nee HALL) also remarried, in 1940; assume you have that info. (Their decree nisi was not granted until 1939).

I'm not sure this is the same Chas who remarried Hazel (she was born in 1921). I believe he was Chas Alexander George OAKLEY, born in Perth in 1919 to Geo & Annie. Because according to a 1945 birth notice for Oakley (nee Hazel Vallance), he was known as George and they were living in Bassendean (links to these other Oakleys in same suburb). Let me know if you would like details or check yourself in West Australian family notices at NLA Trove Newspaper site...very confusing!

Had a look at birth record and Charles parents were....Charles Arthur(Stoker, Royal Navy) and Harriet Rachel Tunbull Oakley ms Hazel....they married in Portsmouth England 29/10/1901

This may be a coincidence but there is an Electoral Role entry for a Charles Allen Oakley together with a Harriet Emma Oakley 1954 Victoria his occupation is given as Marine Engineer.

Edit......think it is just a coincidence....there was a Charles Allen Oakley on the 1911 English census.

There is a record of a death of a Private David Victor Oakley who died in Greece 1941 aged 31 in the Aukland War Memorial Museum.....can't be sure that it is your grandfather's halfbrother but age would be correct..... I know it's a bit of a long shot but have you tried New Zealand?

Also a death for a David Victor in Swansea Wales but no age.

Aileen

Aileen Report 24 Jul 2011 18:25

Do you know what your grandfather's occupation was?

Aileen

Aileen Report 24 Jul 2011 19:25

Almost sure that David Victor Oakley who died in Greece was your grandfather's half brother Commonwealth war graves have him as nephew of Rebecca Fry.....James Fry brother of Jane married Rebecca Mclintock.....I do realise you may already know all this but in case you don't I'll post it here.

Still can't find anything on Charles.

Or Qld?

The Courier-Mail, Saturday 26 February 1938
Found Drunk In Charge of Truck
Charles Oakley, 36, relief worker, was fined £5, in default 21 days' imprisonment, when he pleaded guilty In the Police Court yesterday to having been found under the influence of liquor while in charge of a motor truck at Musgrave Road, Red Hill.

Maybe someone can check electoral rolls for you?

Burial at Mt Gravatt Cemetery, Qld.

Oakley Charles 06 / 06 / 1967 65 years

Seems to be with others who died on same day of various ages and surnames, but all over 64.

Age fits????

Thank you for your research. I am not sure if he did re-marry, he probably did though. His parents were Charles Arthur Oakley and Harriet Rachel (nee Hazel). She died in Perth Scotland in 1906.
My grandfather was taken to England in 1911 to live with his aunt kate and uncle. Once again thank you. I may just find him with all this help.
Estelle

Thanks for the PM, Ive posted it here so that others have the info.

Regarding the link to Hazels of Caithness.....the information on the parents of Charles senior may not be correct although they are what is given on his marriage cert to Jane Fry.....parents appear to have actually been William Henry Oakley and Maria Skerratt....the family were from Enfield Middlesex

Note the remarriage in WA is not him, as per my earlier post
Did you see the possible burial in Qld?

Hi Estelle please post your comments on here and then we can all help x

Thank you for all your help. My grandfather could have changed his name as he left my grandmother with two small children to support. I have looked at a lot of electoral rolls here in Aust. He could have gone back to England or back to N.Z.

I thought Cherilyn had sorted this?

And it is confusing, you using two board names

Cherilyn

Cherilyn Report 26 Jul 2011 09:50

Is Estelle and Aileen the same person?

Who is Katie Wright?

Gee

Gee Report 26 Jul 2011 09:57

I think so reading the posts from Estelle and Aileen but I may be wrong! Maybe Aileen has looked as SP and has more info...think I am mistaken

I would guess Kate Wright was Charles A Oakley' aunt, his mothers sister?

But she was born in Enfield?
