Find Ancestors

I am having difficulty in tracing early details of my great grandfather Henry FREE. According to his death certificate,he was born in 1856 and died 23/8/1899 in Barnsley. He married Annie Booth WATSON in 1893. She was born in 1870. Their children included Kezia and William.
I can find no trace of Henry Free in the Census returns nor can I find details of his marriage. I have thought of him having changed his name, being born overseas or my eyesight failing badly. Can anyone assist or possibly point me in the right direction ? I'm really struggling with this.

Do you have a birth cert for one of the children to know the name of the mother ? What is the occupation of Henry on the cert

You say they married in 1893 but then say you can not find details of the marriage -so have you guessed an approx year of marriage

do you have a childs birth cert if so what was Henrys occupation?

In looking for a Henry Free of the right age I can find no births at the right time but keep comig back to this Henry who is listed as Henry Free in 1871 and 1891.

He appears to have been born pre his mother's marriage and does live at the other end of the country from the Henry you are looking for. Just a thought.

Does his death cert and children's birth certs list Henry Free's occupation? In 1891 this one is listed as a gardener

Ernest has sent reply to my pm so have hopefully told him how ton get back to this thread! answer as to what Henry's occupation was


He was a railwayman so could have originated anywhere and moved with the railways. His daughter Kezia was born in Chesterfield but he possibly married Annie in Barnsley area

This was my first post on GR and I'm amazed at the response. Many thanks to all of you.

1. Ref Marieceleste's query - Kezia Free ( my Grandmother ) was shown as being born in Chesterfield 24/7/1894 - birth cert
She did have a half-sister Lizzie ( Sarah Elizabeth Pye ) born 20/10/1892
What they would be doing in an orphanage in Chepstow ( a LONG way from home ) is anybody's guess but possibly worth looking at further.

2 An update on some background

I have been able to trace Annie Booth Watson's family back but Henry Free has stumped me.

K has found a Henry Free in Leyton also showing the name of Barnard but Henry Free did die in Barnsley in 1899 and is buried at Carlton, Barnsley...

BUT where did Henry Free come from ? He was a railwayman so could have originated anywhere and followed the railway companies.

At least it's something to do when there's nothing on tele....

Just to confirm - Kezia was the daughter of Henry Free and Annie Watson

She married Pye in 1890 but I was unaware of what happened to him - did he die or were they divorced ? She then married Free in 1893. Kezia was then born in 1894.
If Pye died in 1896, they must have divorced presumably unless I'm looking at skeletons in my cupboard.
