HeyJudeB4Beatles Report 17 May 2013 18:27

Hi everyone - have just updated a thread about James (junior) and his daughter Mary....and I knew I had another...so updating this one as well.

OK - I have James Ames Marchant's will and it proves - Dorcas is a daughter; James and Alfred were alive in 1876. Since this thread originally - it seems rather than Richard being James' father, Richard's sister was James' mother. And to confuse matters she married a John Marchant! :-)

So now going to pour through these things on Alfred in the USA.....

Just an update

Have added Dorcas and Angelina to my trees (on here and Ancestry) and as a result have opened up about forty more relatives! So even though Alfred and James remain an enigma, there has been a success story out of all this.

Thanks!

:-)

Yes my thoughts entirely!!! Ages in 1841 are always dodgy especially for minors as I have found to my cost!

Mary Report 14 Aug 2011 14:47

I have been wondering if William age 5 on 1841 census was infact Alfred as there is no sign of him in 1841.

If Maria can be Sarah then why not!!

HeyJudeB4Beatles Report 14 Aug 2011 12:36

Henry married Eliza Rogers 25/12/1832

1841 census states born in county of Wiltshire. Eliza wife, daughters Charlotte Selina and Mary. Charlotte transcribed as Eliza - clearly Charlotte!

1851 and 1861 he states he was born in Portsmouth Hampshire! However, rest of family remains constant. In 1851 still in Trowbridge new daughter Ann Rosanna and two visitors named Rogers which must be Eliza's relatives.

1861 in Islington with Ann Rosanna - she marries 1865 and Eliza and Henry both die in Islington in 1860s.

Have added Angelina and Dorcas to my tree to see what connections it makes. Not sure about William as can't find him on Familysearch - but then I can't find the other two boys either!

The Angelina Dorcas connection - yes I found this on Family search...but hadn't done anything about it because I hadn't been able to see the 1841 census. Because of course James age is wrong - though what's new? And wife is shown as Sarah not Maria...and who is William?!!!!

Yes Ann I noticed that - Facebook indeed!! :-D

Hi Mary,

I did try to go through the district page by page but there is only the front page on the census on Ancestry. I assume the rest is missing. Just wondered if anyone else had access to 1841 census need to look at trowbridge enumeration district 11 covering Mortimer street.

Yes I noticed Mary Marchant niece. I have found another child of a John and Ann christened 22/03/1809 - Henry. Haven't investigated yet.

Sometimes districts changed between census records,I have noticed this a few time whem searching my self.

it seems the only way is to go through the whole of them, which takes forever.

There may have been another sibling for James Ames and Edward Ames as on the census 's for Edward there is a niece Mary Marchant born about 1838 who seems to remained unmarried but I can't determine whose daughter she was.

I have just trawled on Ancestry through the Enumeration districts for Trowbridge in 1841. Whilst there are 14 pages for District 2 where Mary has found John and Ann, Mortimer Street where James and Maria were living at the time is District 11 and there is only the front sheet. Does anyone have access to the 1841 census elsewhere that they could look up?

HeyJudeB4Beatles Report 13 Aug 2011 19:49

The plot thickens.

My great great grandfather was definitely James Amed/Ames Marchant.

I have the probate and the "formerly of Cardiff" is the pointer. In 1851 census James and Maria are living in Trowbridge with their five children. By 1861, Sarah, Maria and Rebecca are all in Cardiff. Sarah, by then Pratt, must have been there for at least six years as her first born son was born in Cardiff.

Maria was a servant and not yet married as was Rebecca.

Maria senior died in Cardiff Q1 1859 and in Q4, James married Selina Perkins. They are living in Cardiff in 1861. I have long worried that I had the wrong James as if born in 1809 he was only 16 at his marriage!

I had looked into the John and Ann scenario sometime ago - thinking maybe John was a brother to Richard. I also suspect Ann may have been Ames before marriage.

So whilst it doesn't fill in the gaps for James junior and Alfred it wipes a whole load of lineage going back...deep joy! A challenge or what!

Thanks everyone! I have a week off next week - guess what I am going to be doing?!! ;-)

I have just found that I had this for Alfred ..
Name:Alfred Marchant
Gender:Male
Birth Date:abt 1837
Christening Date:1 Oct 1837
Christening Place:Trowbridge, Wiltshire, England
Father's name:James Marchant
Mother's name:Maria

I also have the christening record for James confirming 1828 (didn't realise I had either of these so all this has at least prompted me to find these!)

So I don't think the 1841 census in Bradford Wiltshire is the right one. In the 1851 census James Snr is a cloth manufacturer which fits with the emigrated Alfred perhaps. When James moves to Cardiff he becomes a grocer which he remained for the rest of his life.

The American connection looks quite possible - it would certainly explain why Alfred drops off the world so to speak!
