Sometimes we don't see those boundaries that were set in the past in through the present eye, which may be how i was looking in the wrong areas etc.

Thanks all

It's OK Barbz - you did not upset me - I'm just a historian wanting to keep the identity alive

so it should be:-

John Jennings married Mary Parkinson in Ulverston, Lancashire

Barbz

Barbz Report 29 Aug 2011 15:33

John Jennings and Mary had a son called John J Jennings

Barbz

Barbz Report 29 Aug 2011 15:33

I understand the counties were all different back then, so apologies if I upset any Lancashians and Cumbrians.

Thanks

I have found John Jennings ancestors back to the 1700's in Cornwall.
John Jennings married Mary Parkinson in Ulverston, Cumbria.

lancashireAnn Report 29 Aug 2011 14:11

this is a John J Jennings born in Dalton in Furness (which is a long way from Wigan and Skem)

Cumbria Birth indexes for the years: 1859
Surname Forename(s) Sub-District Registers At Mother's Maiden Name Reference
JENNINGS John Jone Dalton Barrow JONES D/10/425

mmn = Jones

from cumbriabmd.org.uk

also as a Lancastrian please can I make a plea that if you record that marriage in Ulverston you record it as Lancashire not Cumbria. Cumbria was not a county until 1971 All the Furness area which includes Barrow and Ulverston right up to Coniston was lancashire until then

How the county lines in the UK, have changed and developed over the years is astounding!

I was also thinking of Wigan for searching his birth records as the nearest town is Dalton.

Dalton Lancashire is near Skelmersdale.

As per Wikipedia:
Skelmersdale is a town in West Lancashire, England. It lies on high-ground on the River Tawd, 6 miles (10 km) to the west of Wigan, 13 miles (21 km) to the northeast of Liverpool, 15 miles (24 km) south-southwest of Preston. As of 2006, Skelmersdale had a population of 38,813,[1] down from 41,000 in 2004. The town is known locally as Skem. The first recorded use of the name Skelmersdale appears in the Domesday Book of 1086. It was under the rule of Uctred as part of the hundred of West Derby.

The urbanisation and development of Skelmersdale largely coincided with the Industrial Revolution. Industrial scale coal mining began in the early 19th century and continued to expand during that century to give rise to Skelmersdale as an important colliery village.

Broughton On Furness is now in Cumbria, even though it states on the 1901 census that it is Lancashire. Maybe it was back then.

????????

Lancashire Birth indexes for the years: 1856
Surname Forename(s) Sub-District Registers At Mother's Maiden Name Reference
JENNINGS John Wigan Wigan & Leigh JENNINGS WIG/45/415

This would fit with his birthplace as per 1881 and 1901

I think that stating in 1911 that his birth was in Dalton in Furness was a mistake.

My grandmother Isabella Jennings was born on 24 April 1904, married to Thomas Newton Bewick in Tynemouth 1923, and died in 1992 in Walkergate Hospital in Newcastle upon Tyne.

Hope this information helps.
