Hi, I am looking for information about Fred, Rowland and Olive Addison. Their sister Amy was my grandmother. They lived in Lancashire and Fred went into the church. Rowland emigrated to Canada in about 1910 but I don't know what happened to Olive. If this is your family too, please get in touch!

Thanks for the response. This is definitely the family. I have a little more information about Fred in that he was a vicar in Manchester until at least 1942. I think he may have died in Manchester in 1965, but again, he could have died in 1941. I'm still investigating this.

I had a feeling Olive had died sometime between the 1901 and 1911 census, so these details may be correct.

As for Rowland, the info you've given is great. I knew he'd married, but not when and to whom. I do know that he was a customs officer in Canada ( Toronto, I think). The family all seemed to lose touch round about then. My father was an only child, so it would be great to learn if I have cousins in Canada.

Canadian BMD are notoriously difficult to search because of their privacy laws.

On the off chance that any son was also named Rowland, I did a search on
whitepages.ca - but there are 21 R Addison's in the results!

It's possible that Rowland might have named a son after him, but my father ( his nephew) was named Rowland also ( born in 1921), so I assume he may have wanted to avoid it!

It certainly does seem difficult to obtain Canadian information - some sites promise a lot, but deliver little. I am very new to this game, but am learning fast!

I really only wanted to find out about great-uncle Fred, because my late father always wanted to know if the long-held family belief that he had risen to the heights of bishop was true. I realise now that it probably wasn't, but Rowland is starting to seem a lot more interesting.

I don't see your guy in 1911 - maybe he stayed in the US for a year or more. (He was in Canada for the US 1910 census).
So lets try Muriel Ward - split view gets her 1911 image.
Her addy is Lot 20 Concession III=3.

Head E on Adjala 20 Sideroad - between Concession Rds 3 & 4, there's 2 farms to the S of you.
One of these would likely be the Wards' 1911 farm.

Although it's nothing to do with your mob, the Nottawasaga R flows N and empties into L Huron at Wasaga Beach.
During the war of 1812, the schooner Nancy was being used to supply Fort Michilimackinac which controls the strait between L Huron & L Michigan. As soon as they heard they were at war, the Brits rushed 700 men up there, had the fort under siege and the local residents captured as hostages before the local US commander knew they were at war. He surrendered, fearful of a massacre of the civilians by Britain's indian allies. The Brits then rushed most of the men back before the US knew they'd been missing.
Anyways, back to the Nancy. The Brits lost control of L Huron, and eventually the Nancy was trapped a couple of miles upstream in the Nottawasaga, so it was scuttled. Supply thereafter was by canoe - abt a 600km round trip. The wreck silted up and formed an island in the river. The wreck was rediscovered 80+ y back, and now forms a museum. You cross over on a little footbridge, and the descend into the ship - it's rather neat.

Ontario births are closed for 100 y so you're not likely to learn of kids unless you come across an obit for him or Muriel.
