George Report 8 Sep 2011 09:05

Hi
Thank you for the wealth of information, most of it confirms what I had thought but needed to prove.
What happened is I found a jumbled document on the internet with my 4 x Great Grandfathers name on, which in theory took me back two generations.
Edward Philip Jenkins b 1805 in Dartmouth, he was a coastguard & came from a family which moved around a great deal. His father was Philip Jenkins b 1778 at Blandford forum, Dorset. & Kesiah (spelt in various way) Cassell, another mystery at the moment.
I then began to look at the next generation which included Robert Lovell Jenkins b 1774 & his family. Phiilp Jenkins b 1778, was his brother. These brother seem to be the only ones who carried on the family name but that could change.
I then found the sisters on the census, with the spinster sisters & daughter of Robert lovell..I also think the term niece could be loosley used in the past for great niece etc.

Gilbert Chilcott is in Wilhemina Jenkins b 1780 Exeter, (nee Hole )will, the wife of Robert Lovell Jenkins , so I will look at that area.

I only found the document last week, so I am really pleased with all that I have found & all the help I have received, I am sure I have a lot more to find.
I'll need a week off work , many thanks, Marie.

well there you have it I think !

for the future though it is best ( as the post at the top of this board says ) to give -all- the information you have and to explain your search

I did find all the information that connects what you had together but it would have helped to have it to start with

as for the 'niece' in relation to Octavia Hoare I think that is straightforward

the sisters Charlotte and Emily Jenkins were the daughters of Cornelia Cardew Chilcott ( who married Alfred Jenkins )

Octavia Lucy Chilcott (who married James Hoare) was the sister of Cornelia

so Charlotte and Emily were the nieces of Octavia Hoare with whom Charlotte lived in 1891 and 1901

for the aunt they were living with in 1881 it is also straightforward

she was Laura Charlotte Wilhelmina Jenkins born 1905 in Dover, the sister of Alfred Jenkins, their father

so both Laura and Octavia were the girls' aunts, properly speaking, Laura on their father's side and Octavia on their mother's side

so ... Alfred and his siblings were first cousins of your grx3 grandfather Edward Philip Jenkins 1905 Dartmouth as I understand it :-)

Hi Everyone
I have found an Alfred Jenkins on the 1851 census in Nova Scotia but he came up as Alfred Jenkens. Is it possible to find out or view these records in more detail, there appears to be more Jenkins there too. It within the right time scale.

Any help gratefully accepted, Marie.

if it's on Ancestry you can view the image there

however when I search for Jenkens in Nova Scotia I get only Alfred in Halifax County

there is also one Jenkins in Halifax County with no given name or birth date/place

how unfortunate, automated genealogy seems to have only Canada East, Canada West and New Brunswick ! the one part missing is Nova Scotia

http://www.automatedgenealogy.com/census52/

but the home page says

'Indexing of the 1851 Census of Nova Scotia, which is a head-of-household-only census, has not yet begun.'

so it seems there would be no more information about the household, but someone with Ancestry access can tell you what the image says

This one?

1851 Census of Canada East, Canada West, New Brunswick, and Nova Scotia

Name: Alfred Jenkens
Province: Nova Scotia
District: Halifax County
Sub-District: Halifax

Afraid there's not much info. There was one family living in 1 room, with 1 outbuilding. There were 3 boys under 10, 2 women age 20-30 and 1 male & 1 female in age group 30-40.

No names, occupations or birthplaces.

chrissiex

chrissiex Report 9 Sep 2011 21:05

so that pretty definitely isn't them, thanks Marie Celeste

not the right family composition and these Jenkins seem to have come from wealth so they were not likely living in 1 room :-)

what hard conditions though, 4 adults and 3 children in one room, and winter in Halifax is not easy

JENKINS Alfred Dartmouth Twp

The city of Dartmouth is just across the harbour from Halifax. I presume the city is in Dartmouth Twp.
[FYI - both are abt 100km S of Truro]

For 1851 images, go to:

Click on the Associated Images link

You want p 415, 416, 417, 418
I don't know what the equivalent of dyslexia is for those who can't count, but be aware that the next # after 265 is 411

p 416 is so dark, I can't read any of it.

Twp = Township

so the record is for Dartmouth Township, ie Dartmouth itself

and I do know whereof I speak in this case!

Sylvia - I'm not really familiar with NS land divisions. I wasn't aware that NS had Twps. I've not spent a lot of time there - maybe 4 w in total, with 2 w of it spent 15 y ago nearby (on the Bedford Basin). My son lived in Sydney on CBI for 6 m, but he can't add anything either.

The census images don't give details at the top of every page (or even on the first of each set of 4 pages). I think they only appear on the first page of each enumerators district. P 407 just says Dartmouth, so I imagine that's the city, but there might be fuller details earlier - I didn't page back further.

I first visited NS in 1972

My daughter has lived there since 1999, and we have visited at least once a year since then.

I've done a lot of reading on olden day NS, as well as modern day

Hi Everyone
Just thought I would let you know that I have found the marriage of Cornelia Cardew Chilcott & Alfred Jenkins on cornwall opc database.
Also I found three referrences to Robert Lovell Jenkins & one to Alfred on the national Archives data base.
I appears Alfred was an ordance lieut in RN in 1841 in Nova Scotia, obviously returning to Canada after his marriage in 1845.
Thanks again, Marie

good to confirm that the marriage registration I put on page 1 ( and then tracked all the information from there ) is the right one ... although there was not any actual doubt in my mind :-)

thanks for the update too !
