Jan, I think James will have to remain a mystery! Possibly an enumerator error.

Thanks for the thanks, Thelma - it's great when a brick wall comes down even if it is somebody elses!

That was why I queried the 1881 you found Potty, though it's obviously the right Mary and Francis junior. Maybe she wandered off with another Hopper for a bit! Having said that I can't see Francis anywhere but on the 1891 census.

Potty

Potty Report 10 Sep 2011 15:45

Yes, Thelma, he is proving very elusive. His father's name on the marriage on Ancestry is a bit of a puzzle too. It is just Robert Till, occupation Gardener, not Robert Till Hopper. I did wonder if his parents weren't married.

I have looked on the 1881 for a Robert Till, Gardener, but can't find one.

I also tried an address search on the 1881 for the address on the marriage (Eleanor Cottage, Clarence Road) but not having any success with that either!

Thanks Potty
A bit more that I did not have.
Just wish I could find him pre marriage.

Potty Report 10 Sep 2011 14:55

Francis Henry's baptism was on July 11 1880 at the Parish Church (b June 11 1880, Hackney, father Francis, dairyman, and mother Mary Jane. Address 8 High Sreet. Homerton.

I have checked the 1881 image, and "James" age is given as 28 not 22, which still makes him 9 years younger than "Francis" in the 1891.

Thelma

Thelma Report 10 Sep 2011 14:14

I am reasonably happy that I have the right Mary.

Mary I Percival
Birth: abt 1859 - Sheerness, Kent, England
Residence: 1871 - St Anne Limehouse, London, England

Mary J Percival
Birth: abt 1859 - Sheerness, Kent, England
Residence: 1861 - Sheerness, Minster in Sheppey, Kent, England

Name: Mary Jane Percival
Birth: Jan 1859 - Sheppey, Kent

I am doing this for my best friend,we have several hotmatches in common but no blood connection,as yet. She is not convinced that certificates are needed.

You really need to find out Mary's maiden name for certain.

I think the marriage to Mary jane Percival is a good possibility as Francis junior was born in Middlesex. But I suppose only a birth cert of a child will tell you for sure.
I still think it's all very peculiar though, especially with that james Hopper marriage.
