Hi Potty, my dad has the certificate. The names of Harry and Elsie are definitely correct.

It is also known within the family that he was born in Brighton (where his mum's family were). Maybe she went there for the birth..... but as there isn't a further census from 1911 and grandad (Victor) was born in 1912, then possibly they moved there shortly after the census?

Potty, Re:
Harrie's WW1 record is on Ancestry - if you don't have access, PM me your email address and I will send them to you.

He married Elsie Terry, 2nd August 1911 at Farnham Registrars Office.

Address given is 3 East Station Road and his occupation was pastry cook.

There is one child mentioned, Edward Leslie Francis, b 1916 Aldershot - the DOB is very faint.

When was Victor born?

Edit:

Is this Victor's birth? I wonder why he isn't mentioned on the Service Record?

Apparently, Harry Parkes left for South Africa post 1911. Hence, why he was never talked about - he was the disgrace of the family.

I don't know which year that would have been or where he settled. Does anybody know how you can find such info.?

Thanks!

I can't find a Harry Parkes (or variants) going to SA on the passenger lists on FMP. Does anyone have different information?

Nearest is a Mr H Parkes travelling with a Mrs Parkes and Miss Parkes departing 19 Feb 1921 for Cape Town. Aged 32, 31 and 12 respectively - but the manifest states he was an actor!

I wonder if his Army Service Record might give a clue. The last dated entry is home 29.10.1915 to 6.2.16. The next line is undated and not very easy to read but it looks to me like:

"172nd F Bky. E African Expn Force 7" followed by a squiggle which could be an initial.
