True,Christina. A couple of certs wouldn't hurt either. I'm giving up on this family for today as they're giving me a headache. (for some reason I keep tripping over people named Colbourne...)

Lol, Maureen. Me too....this marriage perhaps??

Marriages Dec 1879 (>99%)
Colborn Eliza Portsea 2b 932
COLBORN* Eliza Portsea 2b 932

Alice's birth cert may give more clues as hers was the only birth registered as McCormick/McCormack. All the other children were registered as Dicks.

Ooooooh. That's far too confusing.

So is Henry George also known as Joseph H, or are they two different people? (I can see a birth for a Joseph Henry, but not for a Henry George).

I think you're right, buying several certificates wouldn't hurt........if only this hobby wasn't so expensive.

But if Emily Maria Dicks was also known as Colbourne, it does make the 1879 marriage for William McCormick to Eliza Colborn look very promising.

But where on earth does Colbourne/Colborn come from?

Edit: Could the 1871 census image, transcribed as Ketcher, read Colborn by any stretch of the imagination?

The Ketchers are definitely Ketcher in 1871, unless the enumerator had written down Colborn (or misheard) and then wrongly copied it over.
Eliza could be from Malsham, which would fit in with Melksham.

Thanks for checking the 1871 image patchem.

Lol Maureen, he gets far more than is good for him. Luckily middle age has not affected his weight.....unlike his owner :-)
