Hi all, I'm trying to find a maiden name for Hellen or Helen Barber
Born Dublin Ireland 1810.
Married Alexander Barber born 1808 Ipswich.
Joined army 1825 and was staitioned at Dublin.
They had a daughter Amelia 1833 .Ireland.
Could anyone look up Amelia as they seem to put mother's maiden name on
records?

Cheers Yvonne :-)

Hi Yvonne,

I have an Alexander Crickett Barber b 1808 Ipswich married to Helen Manning b 1809 Ireland. 1851 census has them living in Dover Castle as the Barrack Sergeant with Hellen (sic) and the following children: Amelia b 1833 Ireland, Eliza J b 1835 Canada, Sarah b 1840 Canada, James A b 1843 Leeds, Benjamin b 1846 Westminster, Susannah b 1848 Walmer & Henry G b 1850 Ireland. I assume this is the same. The surname Manning came from Ancestry.co.uk tree by john meredith Nuneaton, Warwickshire. Any help?
Regards
Chris

Me neither. But I seem to remember that the Irish BMD's aren't on line and you have to physically got to Dublin to access them. I would've thought it would be on the Military registers of marriage but ancestry hasn't got them yet. GR has a military records part but I'm not a full member so can't access it.

Hmmmmmm. . I tried all the chlidren on military births and only Sarah was listed but they don't give maiden name that early. Someone very kindly came up with an irish one yesterday so they must be somewhere online....
Stumped again ! Oh well, thanks for your help Chris.

vonniekatjak Report 10 Oct 2011 10:56

Sorry!
Dublin is listed as birthplace on 1851 cencus. For Helen Barber .
Also Alexander was in the 83rd foot.
I'm looking through my notes and I have no idea now where I've seen
Amelia as Dublin . No It's deffinately just Ireland. Sorry for misleading.

Yvonne...I cannot locate any other than Amelia 1833 (ireland)..I cannot locate the 2 listed 1850 Walmer (is that a misprint..?) or a Henry G.
I would be inclined to:
Check to see if there was not a marriage in England (I cant find one) but thats not to say there wasn't one as it is Pre Civil Reg
Have you obtained Alex.Military Docs.? They may help...
I have tried variations of the Manning surname eg.Mannin etc. also Barber eg Barbour etc nothing showing...
Have you tried Scotland...?

In case she did come from Dublin, you could try searching here:

Hi .. I'm not sure what the "walmer" bit is , that came from Chris above. I may have found a marriage last night Ipswich I believe which seems to tie in with
the family history on the mens side , but I have no more credits left on that site to view it.
Also I have'nt obtained documents. Where would I get those? My information for Alex. was found on here yesterday .
And no, I haven't tried Scotland.
Thanks so much for your help today though it's much appriciated.
I rapidly running out of funds and ideas!

This is the 1851 census from which the info on the Ancestry family tree Chris found is based:

Sub-registration district: St James

Household schedule number: 10

Folio: 210
Page Number: 3
Household Members: Name Age
Alexander Barber 43
Hellen Barber 42 b Ireland
Amelia Barber 18 b Ireland

James A Barber 8 b Yorkshire, Leeds
Benjamin Barber 5 b Westminster
Susannah Barber 3 b Kent, Walmer

Henry Macarthny 20 servant

There are two English births there, so it might be possible to find them on freebmd.

I have looked for James, but nothing is coming up for Yorkshire.

Potty Report 11 Oct 2011 12:35

A possible for Susannah as the tree mentioned above has her b London, even though the census says Kent. Possible Benjamin and her POBs are the wrong way round:

Births Dec 1847 (>99%)
BARBER Susannah Westminster 1 391

I think FMP has Military births - perhaps somebody with access could check the other children on there.
