hi,, Elizabeth Neal was born in 1832 she married William elsey in 1861 in the 1881 and 1891 census she is listed as deaf and dumb then they are both missing in 1901 census william died 1906 but no record of death for elizabeth what happened to her ?? they both lived around hackney and bethnal green

Can't find them at all. Susan married a John Cockburn and lived in Poplar.

I'm a bit puzzled by the order of the people on that 1881 Census

Who is Thomas Elsey, age 70?

and why are the 2 children Susan and Caroline listed after him?

are they really William and Elizabeth's children, or are they Thomas's?


Looking at the actual census image, I see what William (b.ca 1831) and Thomas are both Vegetable Dealers.

Here they are in 1871, with Elizabeth's brother living with them ...... and the image says nothing about her being blind and deaf, which is what it says n the 1881.

I got the impression Thomas was an elderly relative. We don't know if it's his father, maybe an uncle? My thoughts - the males are listed then the females.

And if so this might be him in 1841 as they are living in Crooked Billet Yard which is off Kingsland Road. Kingsland is where Thomas Elsey is born in 1881 census.

There are 3 or 4 trees on ancestry with the Neal(e)s and Elseys, and good documentation ........ but no-one seems to have Elizabeth's death!
