The Spooner / Wickham connection seems to all tie in but am still confused as to how the name Pearson comes into it?

On her marriage certificate to Harry Hewitt in 1906 her father who she said was deceased was a builder which ties in to the Spooner. The marriage in 1906 was in a Catholic church so she may have lied in order to get married there as she may have been divorced. Alternatively she may have been IRish which may explain why it has been difficult to find her.

Any further developments and I will post.

Thanks

Gilly, sorry not to have responded sooner but there seems to have been a glitch with GR over the last couple of days. I think we are going to have quite a bit more difficulty with Harry than with Mabel - he may have been Harry, Harold or Henry or none of these- but I will keep trying. What I'm trying to do at the moment is eliminate the two from Islington and the two from Croydon. I wonder if anyone has better luck than I in locating James Hewitt (b 1842 in Shalford) in 1881 or earlier census records. I know there were a couple of James Hewitts who were at sea, though they seem to have been in the Royal Navy rather than the Merchant service.

Best wishes

Just to say thanks to everyone who is trying to help with the Harry Hewitt and

Mabel Edith Pearson. I am malcolms wife and Harry HEWITT was my great

grandfather. My grandad Frederick never knew his dad and on his death bed told me he thought he had a brother and asked me to find him. Sadly I found him 2 days after my grandad died, he was living locally and looked exactly like my grandad, I gave up my searching to find Harry after this after so many dead ends. But now my elderly mother is desperate to know who her grandad was and what happened to him. So a massive thank you to everyone helping.kind regards Gilly Blake.

If it's the one in the Scrubs, he was born Islington, 1877. I have to go out shortly but will be on to it when I get back. I have to say, I quite fancied the one from Croydon born to James and Ann, based on the fact that she was from Portsmouth and the possible suggestion that James may have previously been at sea.

If your Harry had a history, it is quite possible that he was being economical with the truth at the time of his marriage - Mabel certainly was!

Best wishes

Update. From 1911 census Mabel Edith Pearson was at 102 Coleridge Street with William, Frederick the baby was being looked after by a nursemaid Fanny Clare in Hove. In 1911 the money from Harry to pay for Fredericks upkeep stopped and Frederick was put into Shoreham children's home. There is a Harry Hewitt in the 1911 census in Wormwood Scrubs which may explain his disappearance and the money being stopped.

This looks to be the above in 1881....I'm not saying it is Malcolm's ancestor but I am wondering whether they were both economical with the truth when they married...perhaps one or both of the families were anti-catholic

now we are spoilt for riches :-)

if his age was correct that makes him born in the first half of 1879 or second half of 1878 ( just turned 27 or about to be 28 )

I looked in the 1911 census doing a free search and there is no Harry Hewitt around that age who is a groom

I think we probably all saw the Harry Hewitt aged 6 in 1881 with father Robert who is a stone carver ... and that is the closest I find in censuses

I wonder whether he was really a Henry ?

one Harry in 1881 is not with parents

Name: Harry Hewitt
Age: 2
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1879

Gender: Male
Where born: Yorkshire, Yorkshire, England

Ann Strickland 55
Annie Strickland 12
Arthur Strickland 9
Albert Hewitt 2
Harry Hewitt 2
John Strickland 26
Hannah Strickland 24
Walter Strickland 4

there is no Hewitt Strickland marriage that would explain him

this one in 1881 could be interesting, people were sometimes called by middle names or nicknames if they were named for a parent

Name: Robert Hewitt
Age: 2
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1879
Relation: Son
Father's Name: Robert Hewitt
Mother's Name: Sarah Hewitt
Gender: Male

Robert Hewitt 35 >> petty officer (navy)
Sarah Hewitt 34

Nelly Hewitt 4

but he seems to be

Thank you for showing an interest to help.

I can provide you with the following information;-
The marriage certificate is dated 27-07-1906, the marriage was solemnized at St mary magdalene Church, Upper North Street , Brighton. harry claimed to be 27 years of age and mabel 24 years. His occupation was Hotel Porter and stated a Bachelor. Mabel was down as a spinster with no profession or occupation. the residence at the time of the marriage was 8 upper gardener street Brighton and the witnesses were Daniel Donovan and Maria Nugent. St Mary Magdalene was a Catholic church.
Their son William Harry Hewitt born 11-07-1906 (registered on 21-08-1906)shows that Harry Hewitt was a Groom (Livery Stable) onlya month after saying he was a Hotel Porter on the marriage certificate. he was shown as a Domestic Groom in December 1910 when their second son Frederick John Hewitt was born in Hove on 11-11-1910. A distant family relative says that they believed that Harry and Mabel were divorced or separated (Catholic?) and that the 2 boys were put into the workhouse in Shoreham.
If this can help tie in any loose ends it would be great but there does seem to be a brick wall facing us.
thanks once again for your interest.

I forgot to say that Mabel's father was shown as Albert Pearson (deceased) who was a builder.

Harry's father was given as Robert Hewitt (Seaman, Merchant Services) also deceased.

I found an Albert Spooner of about the right age and with the occupation of carpenter lodging in Reigate, Surrey in 1901. It looks as if he and Edith split up and she reverted to her maiden name and changed other details for good measure. Here are Edith and Albert in 1881:

What I can't make out is how the surname Pearson entered the equation. I've sent Malcolm a pm asking for anything else he has about Harry Hewitt (he used to be in Coronation Street! Married to Concepta, father of Lucille...)
