Joan Report 19 Oct 2011 06:39

Hello everyone I hope soo much that you can help me.
I am tracing the paternal side of my family tree I have come to a standstill. My GG Father John Thomas Rogers was born in 1854 in Woolwich, England. I have most of the information about his marriage, children etc, however when I try to go back further I hit brick walls.
I know his father's name was Robert. It was on John's marriage certificate and also in 1871 England Census : Robert is listed as 44, a Laborer and lives with his wife Sarah and children John, Sarah, Rachell and Edward at 5 B?????? Buildings Woolwich Dockyard, Woolwich.
In this census Robert is listed as being born in Newcastle on Tyne.
I also know that around 1854-1857 the family sailed to Australia as Sarah b1857, Rachell b1858 and Edward's b1863 birth records are there. There were also two other children Ann b 1860 and Robert b1862 born in Australia. I do not know what happened to Ann or Robert as they do not appear in 1871 England Census. Obviously the family sailed back to England after Edward's birth in 1863. The reason for going to Australia in the first place is unknown to me.
Any information you could give me would be HUGELY appreciated.
Regards
Joan

Quoy you could be on to something! If his trip to Australia was part of his job would his family also have been allowed to go too? I really don't know much about reasons why the English came to Australia in those days other than as convicts

Ozibird confirmed that it is the correct birth registration

but you still need the certiificate to confirm Sarah's name

I see while I was compiling I wasn't the first to suggest Sarah Smith Rogers in 1851 :-)

Military in colonial Australia

From 1788 marines guarded English settlements at Sydney Cove and Norfolk Island; they were relieved in 1790 by a unit specifically recruited for colonial service, and in 1810 the 73rd Regiment of Foot became the first line regiment to serve in Australia. From then until 1870, 25 British infantry regiments and several smaller artillery and engineer units were stationed in the colonies. One role of the troops was to guard Australia against external attack, but their main job was to maintain civil order, particularly against the threat of convict uprisings, and to suppress the resistance of the Aboriginal population to British settlement.

Most transportation ceased between 1840 to early 1850s with some more going to Western Australia until the 1860s.

Updated: Before 1870 each of the major ports in colonial Australia were defended by the British garrison troops from the Royal Garrison Artillery.
