Re: Conyers look up 20th November 2011

Could anyone let me know if there is a document that would link the James Robert Conyers in the 1901/1911 Census records with the Matilda Ann (mother of James Robert Wilson ) birth records to confirm they are the same person ??

GillianMac Report 20 Nov 2011 14:40

I think it leaves us with a made-up name on the marriage cert -his father WAS Robert but not Conyers -he was Wilson as we have already established fro birth registration and baptismal records, and as often happens fathers names (if the bride or groom were born out of wedlock) are made to agree with the name being used by said bride or groom.

As to why James Robert decided to take the name of his mothers first husband Edwin Conyers --who knows -maybe he didnt get on with Robert Wilson?

Gillian/Catherine

Marriage certificate states fathers name as Robert Conyers, not sure where this leaves us with the information supplied ? what do you think ?

June

June Report 29 Oct 2011 14:53

Are there any parish records for the marriage of James Robert Conyers and Eliza Pickles 1883 ?

June

June Report 27 Oct 2011 20:45

We are ordering the marriage certificate for James Robert Conyers and Eliza Pickles to confirm his fathers name, hopefully this will fit in with the information that you have supplied, thanks.

June,
Just because the couple are together and they say they are married in the 1861 census, doesn't mean to say that it is true.
They probably just said they were married to avoid any scandal. At least Robert recognised the children, which wasn't always the case.

In the 1861 census Matilda Ann is Married to Robert Wilson living with young James Robert and Matilda

Catherine thanks for putting the events in order, I can now understand where they all fit in.
Why do you think he adopted the 'Conyers' name as opposed to Wilson that is on his birth records ?

GillianMac Report 26 Oct 2011 13:23

She certainly didnt marry Robert Wilson as he is married later censuses to an Elizabeth.
Thank you Catherine for putting it all together -she certainly was a busy lady!

Catherine Report 25 Oct 2011 23:33

I would say that she didn't marry Robert Wilson.

Matilda Ann Priestley married Edwin Conyers in 1859

1861 she had left her husband and was living with Robert Wilson to whom she had twins, James and Matilda Ann Wilson.

Edwin Conyers died, Matilda left Robert (or he too died) and she married James Ranson in 1868.

..........seems she had a busy time. ;-)

Sorry a bit confused ! what do you think James Robert's surname was registered as at birth ?

GillianMac

GillianMac Report 25 Oct 2011 19:56

The twin sister Matilda Ann also appears as Ranson 1871 after her mothers marriage to James Ranson
She marries 1878 Jun Q Leeds Mark Haley (as Matilda Ann C Ranson -a nod to the name Conyers?)
!881 at 31 Franchise St Leeds she andMark have a 5 monthold son Mark W Haley

GillianMac Report 25 Oct 2011 19:41

James Robert Wilson and his twin sister Matilda Ann Wilson were both born 14/10/1860 and baptised 20/11/1860 Leeds children of Robert Wilson and Matilda Ann Wilson, so it would seem that Robert Wilson was the father of both

Or alternatively -looking at what Catherine has posted could it be that the reason Matilda Ann is not with her husband Edwiin in 1861 is not that she has returned to Ireland but that she has left him for Robert Wilson?
Seems to fit with age and place of birth for Matilda and James Robert's later profession as Cabinet Maker
Think the birth cert of James Robert wilson is needed to settle this
