If i know the year and the quarter of someones birth is there any way i or someone on here can get the actual birth date without buying expensive birth certificates. The period in question is early 1900s

Might depend on location

Ancestry has London Births and Baptisms to 1906 but not all areas are covered

MarieCeleste

MarieCeleste Report 25 Oct 2011 20:22

Highly unlikely, unless it's in an area where there are baptism records and the actual birth date also just happens to be recorded on it.

jax

jax Report 25 Oct 2011 20:23

Not normally. if they died after 1969 it maybe recorded on the death reg.

Some batisms befor 1906 if online may give a date of birth

You can try searching at
https://www.familysearch.org/s/collection/list#page=1®ion=EUROPE
in: England Births and Christenings, 1538-1975

or you can browse the images of the unindexed collection:
England, Diocese of Durham Bishops' Transcripts ca., 1700-1900
However, Sunderland only goes to 1842, although Monkwearmouth goes to 1869.

Yes i have that but a name change at 21 from Metcalf to Pallas in 1927 is my qestion .I beleive he would be too old for adoption at 21 and was wondering if they are the same person why wait till then to change his name .His mother did marry Robert Pallas in 1909 after Thomas William Metcalf was bornin 1906 and they are together in 1911census.

Dea

Dea Report 26 Oct 2011 14:26

Robert's Army records show that he married Margaret Metcalf and that their son Thomas William's date of birth was 2nd December, 1905.

Don't confuse the date at which stuff was rego'ed with when it actually happened - you've already seen jax's post showing a 1905q4 birth that was rego'ed in 1906q1. My guess is he changed his surname soon after birth, but no one bothered abt re-rego'ing the birth until 1927, when they fished his b.cert out for something or other and realized they'd not changed it.

I am almost convinced they are the same person.I will be checking the birth date of Thomas William Metcalf in 1905-1906 in parish records at my local library but I do not think there will be a record for Thomas W Pallas If i send for a birth certificate of him do i state 1906 or 1927
Can you change your name without cancelling original record

Dea

Dea Report 26 Oct 2011 14:40

I wonder if it has anything to do with adoption becoming legal in 1927!

I expect there were many people who had been unofficially adopted before then who would have wanted to confirm this legally when it became possible to do so ??

That would explain it .Idid not know that it looked obvious Metcalf became Pallas after his stepfather but records of birth appear to show 2 people born
Thanks everyone who has pitched in

Makem - no, I don't think it does.

I know the Adopted Children's Register dates from 1927, and (from the army record) we know Thos was over 21 on 1/1/1927.

I don't know the English law, but the Act for Scotland passed a couple of years later only allowed the adoption of minors (i.e., under 21s).

So I don't think Thos was adopted under the 1927 Act, but I don't know for sure.
Again, I don't know the English law, but under Scots law, the subsequent marr of Thomas's mum and dad would legitimize his birth if they were both free to marry at the time of his birth. I looked into this as it applied to 2 of my g gran's half brothers - the elder was already named Pallas, but the younger was Thomas Metcalf, say, and he changed his name after they wed to Thomas Metcalf Pallas at the age of 16.

Hi mgnv. I do think that after his mother Margaret Metcalfs marriage to Robert Pallas in 1909 he automaticaly was known as a Pallas, I was just wondering why it was not made official till 1927.The death record which jax gave me above also stated his birth as 2-12-1905 which matches the army record of stepfather Robert supplied by dea, hopefully when i go and check the Metcalf birth at my library that also matches. If it was not an adoption maybe he changed his name for work reasons or maybe Robert is actually the real father but befor they decided to wed i really dont think i will find the true reason as on his marriage certificate in 1934 i'll bet fathers name is Robert Pallas
