I wonder if it has anything to do with adoption becoming legal in 1927!

I expect there were many people who had been unofficially adopted before then who would have wanted to confirm this legally when it became possible to do so ??

I am almost convinced they are the same person.I will be checking the birth date of Thomas William Metcalf in 1905-1906 in parish records at my local library but I do not think there will be a record for Thomas W Pallas If i send for a birth certificate of him do i state 1906 or 1927
Can you change your name without cancelling original record

Don't confuse the date at which stuff was rego'ed with when it actually happened - you've already seen jax's post showing a 1905q4 birth that was rego'ed in 1906q1. My guess is he changed his surname soon after birth, but no one bothered abt re-rego'ing the birth until 1927, when they fished his b.cert out for something or other and realized they'd not changed it.

Yes i have that but a name change at 21 from Metcalf to Pallas in 1927 is my qestion .I beleive he would be too old for adoption at 21 and was wondering if they are the same person why wait till then to change his name .His mother did marry Robert Pallas in 1909 after Thomas William Metcalf was bornin 1906 and they are together in 1911census.

You can try searching at
https://www.familysearch.org/s/collection/list#page=1®ion=EUROPE
in: England Births and Christenings, 1538-1975

or you can browse the images of the unindexed collection:
England, Diocese of Durham Bishops' Transcripts ca., 1700-1900
However, Sunderland only goes to 1842, although Monkwearmouth goes to 1869.

Not normally. if they died after 1969 it maybe recorded on the death reg.

Some batisms befor 1906 if online may give a date of birth

The area i am looking for is Sunderland Durham in 1906

MarieCeleste

MarieCeleste Report 25 Oct 2011 20:22

Highly unlikely, unless it's in an area where there are baptism records and the actual birth date also just happens to be recorded on it.

GlitterBaby

GlitterBaby Report 25 Oct 2011 20:21

Might depend on location

Ancestry has London Births and Baptisms to 1906 but not all areas are covered
