I am afraid I am grasping at straws, searching for a mary born in Brighton & matching it to a census I don't know for certain IS the right one. I have been down this road before with this line, convinced I was right, only to find out after much research I was not. This James seems to travel about a bit, if he is one & the same. Born in somerset marries in the Hull area, lives in Surrey, children in Reading, Slough & Maidenhead Berkshire.
The headstone reads thus:

Emily Maud Green Died 8th September 1990 aged 86 years
Lewis Edward Green Died 31st May 1977 aged 76 years

Also a dear mum & Grandma

Mary Kelly died April 1947 aged 82 years

Also a dear brother & uncle

Albert Frederick Harrison died 11th January 1992 aged 82 years

Thanks to everyone for giving their time

I know nothing other than his surname of Mr. Kelly. He is not mentioned on the gravestone. Once again this line of my family is a mystery to me.

Apparently Mary Kelly was Martha Mary Kelly. I have a possible link with a death of a Martha M Kelly registered at Spen Valley Yorkshire, whose age matches up with my Mary (82). I get her death certificate & see where that leads me. I feel I am one small snippet of onformation away from making progress.

Allan, that was also the closest match that I could find for Mary's death.

Do please comeback on here as soon as you've got the certificate and let us know what it says - I'm determined we'll get to the bottom of this one!

The death certificate for Martha Mary Kelly has arrived. It confirms she was the widow of John Kelly (a night watchman). She died in my grandparents house on the 26/04/1947 aged 82 years. My grandmother Emily Maud Green was present at the death.
As I have a definite husband I have found a marriage of a Mary Harrison to a John W Kelly in Grimsby, registered in the september quarter 1921.

Well, that's certainly a step in the right direction!

Really, the next step is to get a copy of that 1921 marriage certificate which should give her father's details and any previous names she was known by. We might then have a good chance of tracking her back.

The step in the right direction was another blind alley I think. Maybe she did not want to be traced! Mary's marital condition was registered as a spinster. Her father was John Harrison, deceased. He was employed as a gardener, the same as James in the 1911 census. It could be they are one and the same person, as john is often used in place of James. Maybe this is not my Mary!!!
