PM from Christina. Have advised her to post replies onto here.

On the 1911 census Beatrice lied saying she was born in B'water because she was born in Wolborough Newton Abbott Workhouse(census 1881 age 6)Mary Ann Burlington, her sister(census1881 age 8)Florence was the one born in B'water, she had 2 little brothers also born in same workhouse as Mary(later calling herself Beatrice 1911 census)No idea what happened between btwn 1881/1911 with the exception of illegitimate birth in 1901.Would like to know how where when my grandmother died?No Birth/marriage and more importantly Death cert appear to exist?

Penny Report 2 Nov 2011 19:18

My Pm's

1)Yes she did morph into Beatrice Kerr, because on myfathers birth cert for mother it says Beatrice Kerr formerly Mary ann Burlington.

2) In 1901 Mary Ann Burlington gave birth to illegitimate Wilfred Sidney, only above mother on birth cert no father.By the 1911 census Mary was "married" to Robert Kerr and calling herself Beatrice Kerr she still had Wilfred with her age 9 but calling him Kerr and robert and her by now had 4 children of their own the youngest of which was my father and on his birth cert for mother it say for mother Beatrice Kerr formerly Mary ann Burlington.

3)I have my father's birth cert,it says mother Beatrice Kerr formerly Mary Ann Burlington. He was born in Devonport as were his 3 siblings she had with Robert Kerr, before that she had an illegitimate son Wilfred in 1901.There are no records of where she went when she left workhouse and no Birth/marriage/Death certs??

4) Easy,My dad's birth cert clearly states""mother Beatrice Kerr FORMERLY Mary Ann Burlington""

cant work this out! its frustrating me!

there is this marriage

Marriages Sep 1904
Kerr Robert Devonport 5b 695
Sanders Edith Devonport 5b 695

Are there two Robert Kerrs in Devonport area by 1911?

Christine says she was "married" in quotation marks, meaning, I think, that she wasn't legally married.

p.s. I've also had a pm from Christine and asked her to reply on the thread.

Mary

Another PM! I have also explained how to post onto here:

What I am trying to find is records of my grandmother especially her death where when how?Looking at my father's birth cert, she was born the above name then changed to Beatrice Kerr, but I can find no record of a Birth/Marriage or Death cert??

Mary

Mary Report 2 Nov 2011 20:35

Her brother Roland born 1877 died I think as Rowland Burrington in 1887 Newton Abbott,as Roland can't be found after 1881.

Her son Wilfred Sydney died as Burlington 1964.

Could this be Mary Ann Burrington born @ 1875 died Exeter Devon
J/F/M 1948 7a 388.

If she didn't marry and her real name was Mary Ann then could it be a possibility??

Good find Mary - it can't be that common a name can it, especially in the right area.
I would be tempted to get that cert if it were me.

pm received.
Mother's name change is shown on a child's birth certificate (1908).

Mother :
Beatrice Kerr formerly Mary Ann Burlington

Penny

Penny Report 3 Nov 2011 07:22

I seriously wonder if they are one & the same lady - Mary & Beatrice . I wonder if you could ( two women) go along to the registrar & register the child, say ''I gave birth to him but she's going to be is mother''

Sounds bizarre but.....

Perchino Report 3 Nov 2011 08:02

Does this help from Wikipedia:

Registration of a deed of change of name is not a legal requirement in the United Kingdom. A standard legal document, with stock wording, filled in by the person making the deed poll, and signed in presence of a witness, carries sufficient legal authority to be recognized. The witness need not be a solicitor but can be anyone over the age of 18 independent of the person changing their name.

I have looked for old Deed Poll records and can find no trace of the name change being registered.

Penny has made a good point, need to ponder that one!

I wonder if Christine has birth certs for other children, I would be interested to see what the mother's name is recorded as.

Christine, do have another go at posting on here. If you look just below all these replies you will see an empty box. Just type in it and click 'submit'.

This looks like the birth reg of the Roland who died 1887. His birth cert might give some clues:

Births Sep 1877 (>99%)
Burlington Roland Newton Abbot 5b 135

Mary

Mary Report 3 Nov 2011 14:11

I wonder who the informant was on death cert of Robert D Kerr 1936.

Sorry if thats already been asked.

Penny Report 3 Nov 2011 14:27

I wonder how many people show on the 1901 census as born Wolborough ( Without looking back, was that the place name?) about the right age?

Potty

Potty Report 3 Nov 2011 15:24

Ancestry has 70 people b 1875 +/- 5 born Wolborough. No Mary Ann, No Burlington and one Beatrice:

Name: Beatrice Cornish
[Beatrice Simpston] - this is wrong - her mother is Elizabeth A Cornish-Bowden, living on own means, son a veterinary student. Don't think this could be "our"Beatrice. There is a birth reg for this one in 1879.
Age: 22
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1879
Relation: Daughter
Mother's Name: Ethel C Simpston
Gender: Female
Where born: Wolborough, Devon, England
