It took you ages to find the family? Sorry-it's going to take us (helpers) a few more minutes to catch up!!

Geez!

I still don't understand how/why you know that the 1851 family is "yours".

BatMansDaughter

BatMansDaughter Report 6 Nov 2011 08:01

There are lots of trees on ancestry stating that Amelia married William Hardy and died in Utah USA in 1896.

Pamela Report 6 Nov 2011 08:02

Amelia Newland joined the Mormons and move to Salt Lake City 1871 after the death of her father and leaving her husband George behind in Portsmouth. She took most of the children.

The daughter Mary shows in the 1871 census, so must be there in the 1861 census.
Have you got George's 1871 census?
Also, what other children were alive in 1861?

I assumed this was Mary in 1871 - so Amelia should also still be showing in 1871?

I have tried to find Georgina, any Georgina, in 1861:
Births Sep 1855
Newland Georgina Portsea 2b 299
Was Amelia completely estranged from her husband and hiding from him?
Completely different names for the 'family'?

Added:
Cannot see husband in 1861, either, and as he comes from Windsor Berkshire and was living in Portsea in 1871 he is fairly obvious without any name in 1851.

Hi All....and thanks for your interest.
1. Patchem..................there is a possibility that Amelia was "hiding" from George Newland.......but I can't find him either. 1861
2. Amelia does not show up in the 1871 census, even though she did not leave England til July 1871
3. that could be daughter Mary in 1871. She did go with her mother in July. It could be that the family had broken up by 1871 I will check the 1871 for more of the children.
4. Yes.........I have George Newland in 1871 and Ann a daughter who remained in England.

Thanks again.
PS to Penny...father was thomas Knight but I have all his info thanks. It's just Amelia is elusive in 1861 and 1871 <3
