Sorry for long absence - have now obtained Homeric crew lists from Canada and can confirm he was on its maiden voyage in 1922 and several others as address given ties in with address given at time of marriage later that year and also another in Southampton for some sailings where he must have been lodging.

The Kate Martin in Battersea connection now looks very interesting as his place of birth of one sailing says Battersea - hopeful.

Maureen, I think you may be on to something with the name as Thomas on the 1891. If you look at the Stuart family a little further up the page, look at the way the enumerator has written the name Thomas, particularly for the son age 3.

EDIT: - missed your post above!

I think the 1891 with James, Kate and the three boys is a suspiciously close match, however I don't think the name is Stringer - I'd concur with the K/Hurrias option. The occupation is a coincidence, though. I don't know London very well but is it possible the area where they were would be where a lot of printers lived anyway?

Perhaps it is James Stringer and he was living under an assumed name because he'd run off from Phoebe?! Rootgatherer has a good point there.

What about deaths for a Frederick Martin?

Re: James Toussaint - by 1891 his wife Alice appears to have remarried to a George D Mill.

Got to pop out for a wee while, this one is going to keep me awake at nights!

I found this in 1881.

James Toussaint born 1857 STRAND Printers Assistant!!
Alice 1856
James 1878
Alice 1880.

I was wondering if that could be the guy in 1891 but???

Its annoying me now!!

Call me crazy, but that 1891 couldn't by any stretch read Thomas, could it??

Just messing about with the baptisms:
All London, England, Births and Baptisms
Frederick Arthur Thomas 25 Sep 1887 Parents:James Thomas,
Kate Thomas Battersea St Stephen Wandsworth

James Sidney Thomas 25 Sep 1887 Parents:James Thomas,

Father is a printer. No dates of birth are given.

I can't make heads or tails out of it either,Maryb.

Also couldn't find a Kate Martin baptism. It looks as though Sidney and Fred are the only ones listed.

Best,

Just had a second opinion on 1891 census, they can't see where it says Stringer either.

If you look above their entry there is a Stuart which doesn't look like the Kurrias writing.

Guess is the surname starts with a K or H followed by (urrias)

Mary, I followed on from the 1891 census with James Kiranas. Going backwards (although I couldn't find him even as Stringer in 1901). In 1871 James Stringer's details fit. (year and place of birth etc). James Stringer marries Pheobe and has a son James with her (the one who is the printer's apprentice in 1901) but isn't with her in 1891 or 1901. I think that he is the man with Kate and her family in 1891 but wasn't free to marry her.

I think the "K" of James's surname looks more like "St" on the actual image.

Sorry If I have confused the issue. Like you Mary, I was wondering if the boys were lurking under a different surname in 1891.

I'd be tempted to get the birth cert of either Fred or Sidney (the ones in Wandsworth) and see where that leads me.

Just wondering about this:

MarieCeleste, could you please check to see if there was a Kate Martin baptised by the same family 1881/2.

I can see a birth 1882 but not a baptism.

Thankyou Maryb.

I think the name is Stringer.

This may be the marriage but there is a female missing!

Marriages Dec 1888
ALGER Emily Lucy Wandsworth 1d 1077
Jotham Percy Wandsworth 1d 1077
STRINGER James Wandsworth 1d 1077
SURRIDGE Catherine Wandsworth 1d 1077

EDIT

Sorry there isn't a female missing. Percy is on there twice. And the surname is wrong for the Catherine if she is the correct Kate. Unless of course she never married Frederick.
