Hello everyone,
I have come to a standstill yet again. I am looking for details for the marriage of my great great grandparents, John Clark and Anne (Maybe Annie) Jenkins.

These two were listed as being parents to my Great Grandfather Harry Clark on his death certicate in Lithgow NSW Australia in 1933. I have tried to find Harry's birth before but to no avail. I know he was born in London, Limehouse (1911 Census) in 1863. I don't know whether he was born Harry or Henry and I thought that if I could track his parents down that would help, however I cannot find a marriage for his parents.

I came across a marriage record on FreeBMD

Marriages Jun 1862 (>99%)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Jenkins Ann London City 1c 185

However there is no husband mentioned. Other than writing and ordering the certificate, is there any other way to find out her partner? I am hoping it is John Clark!

Any advice would be appreciated.

Thank you

Joan

On FreeBMD you can do a little trick, include no names and just make the quarter right and the year right, then select London City (the district of her marriage)

This will throw up all the people whom got married in that quarter and that place. Sometimes the page and volume numbers gets mixed up.

This way you can scan the list for names. Sadly there isn't his name there...but it's good knowledge for the next awkward family member!

I'll carry on hunting. Do you know for sure they married?

Will keep that HUGE handy hint in mind....thank you.

No not sure if they did get married as I have no knowledge of their son Harry or Henry prior to 1886 (other than he was born in supposedly 1863 according to the 1911 Census. I know Harry was married on 23.1.1886 to Alice Louisa Leaky at St Nicholas Church Plumstead England and he died in LIthgow NSW Australia in September 1933. I do not know of any siblings either

I'm going to throw this one out there as a possible, mainly because Nancy can be known as Ann, and William John might simply have been known as John.

These death certs are only as good as the quality of information the person reporting the death had. They can only state what they believe to be truthful, this does not actually make it the truth!

Please don't apologise for asking questions.....I am grateful for your help. I have Harry only in 1891, 1901 and 1911 Census. Because I don't know if he was a Harry or a Henry it is the search soooo difficult.

I assume you only have him with his wife, and not parents?

I am beginning to wonder if your Harry Clark, may have been base born and was registered as Harry Jenkins?

So going to change tack a little.

That could be a huge possibility. That would have made Ann 42ish when she had Harry....still a possibility.

There is a marriage of James Clark and Ann Jenkins on Free BMD in September Q 1838. That would make them both aged abt 17

Is John sometimes used for James???

WayneTracey

WayneTracey Report 20 Nov 2011 10:30

Yes it is :-) both names are interchangeable.

I'm excited now...... but how can I be sure if this is John and Ann are my great great grandparents if I can't link them with Harry?

Well I was excited for a little while!!!!

Have you looked on familysearch?

We really need siblings and then find them on the census's.

Breakthru's are always a good feeling, but it's finding the proof that's the hard bit!

We'll keep plodding on!

No I haven't looked on family search....oh I wish I knew Harry;s siblings!!!

I do have one piece of info that has come to mind though, Harry's first born was Henry William Arthur Clark (1887) then came Lilian Louisa (1888) then James Richard Clark (1891) then Arthur John Clark etc etc.

Could Harry's first born who is the ONLY child to have three Christian names be an important hint?

WayneTracey

WayneTracey Report 20 Nov 2011 10:46

Some people did follow naming patterns.

I have been looking at this with respect to Harry's name, he could have been Henry John, and his father could also have been the same.

Do you know whom Ann's parents were, and have you traced them?

Some people did really unexplainable things with their names, and i really do wish they wouldn't!! :-(
