Keep us posted.Good luck with your search.-j

Just an afterthought.............As a child I walked passed this address every day going to school on Wellington Street along with hundreds of mill workers, and cows going to graze in the field. It has certainly brought back memories. Nowadays there is parking on both sides of the road and I had all on to drive down to get out of the street......and not a soul about- j

Janet Report 19 Dec 2011 12:43

Hi Terence- thanks for the update. I decided to drive passed the address of 65 Wellington Street, as I was in the area, and it is a back to back house. It is in the same block as the Foresters houses so it may have been rented from the society in days gone by but nowadays most of the houses are in private hands.

Just for information for people who haven't come across a back to back house in their area These properties grew up around the mills so that they could house all the employees. From this particular property there were three huge mills approximately one hundred yards away. One mill is there but not as a working textile mill, the second has now become new housing, which I hadn't seen before and the third has been converted to apartment living. This is very typical of the industrial area where our ancestors in the woollen trade existed. Another reason why there was emigration to Canada ,the States and Australia / New Zealand was to get some 'space'.-jl

Hi everyone,
We now have the marriage (6/8/1875) certificate for John Haigh and Ellen Iredale, and I have been going down (or should I say back up) the wrong path!

John Haigh, aged 28, bachelor, cloth finisher. Father: Abraham Haigh, Woolen n?????. (Alive at time of John's marriage).
Ellen Iredale, aged 23, spinster, woolen feeder. Father: Benjamin Iredale (deceased). Wool comber.
Residences for John and Ellen both stated as 'Lindley', no other details.
Witnesses: Enos Craven and James Shaw.

It seems that 'Eliz' should have been Ellen in the 1881 census, as John was not married before.

Janet mentioned the death of Ellen's father in the Dec qtr 1851, and her mothers re-marriage in 1853 to Enos Craven, who is a witness on the marriage certificate. So it seems to fit together.

Now I will have to go back and trace the ancestors of the right John and Ellen.

As before, countless thanks to you all for your help.

Terence.

Thanks Barbara,
Have managed to get and print Benjamin's marriage certificate, eventually. As you have said before, it shows Benjamin's father as a "Mason"?!? I am assuming that there is no other John Haigh (Cloth finisher/dresser) married to an Ellen Iredale? We will have to see what is on the marriage certificate for them. It may arrive next week!
With the weekend coming again, I may not get on-line until early next week.

Again thank you very much Barbara.

Again many thanks Barbara and Janet.
We have printed the relevant parts of the map. It is nice to have a reference when addresses are mentioned in the census'.

Re Benjamin and Janey's marriage details, I clicked onto the link, but not being a member of Ancestry, I could not get any extra information. So if you would Barbara, we would appreciate your offer of more information.

Bye for now. Terence.

Thanks Barbara

Yes it is the correct map but someone has just place Huddersfield's biggest Shopping Centre next to Wellington Street and King Street Lindley . Whilst the Kingsgate Centre is in King Street Huddersfield HD1 this King Street is HD3. At least I hope the Emergency Services don't use the map for locating a casualty........

Apart from that it shows clearly Wellington Street, the hospital, the church and if they just move the map a little to the north it will show Birchencliffe, so it is spot on and should be a great help to Terence-jle.

Thank you so much Janet, Your a star, do you think i have the right map for Terence then ? :-)

It can be so confusing when you don't know an area,

Janet Report 14 Dec 2011 13:10

All Wellington Street in the 1911 period were terrace houses. Many of them are back to back. There was a small farm where cattle were kept as late as the 1950's just across the road from this address.

Victoria Street, as well as Wellington Street, is adjacent to Huddersfield Royal Infirmary. East Street is a couple of hundred yards beyond St Stephens church in the same vicinity as the hospital. Yew Tree Road is about half a mile towards Halifax from Lindley, the area is called Birchencliffe nowadays .-jl

Just remembered something else about these houses at Wellington Street , as a child I remember they were referred to as Foresters. I think the Foresters were like a friendly society.

BarbaraFromYorkshire Report 14 Dec 2011 11:28

Hi Terence

With the way the family moved about I would think the houses would be rented --I phoned an estate agent in Lindley and asked if the streets were near each other. She was quite helpful, bless her, (she said she wasn't local to Lindley) she wasn't sure where Yew tree Road was (Where Elizabeth was in 1911 census) and Wellington, Victoria, and East Street ---although not next door to each other, she thought were within walking distance.

I googled the streets and came up with this map---you can move it about and see the streets, hope it helps a little.

Benjamins marriage to Janey---I posted the details of it and a link to the image of it on the 9th (just a few postings up this page) If you click on the link to it you should be able to save it and then print it off. (if you have trouble with the link just let me know and i'll try and download it and send it to you as an attachment) Its just like having the cert that you send for.

Terence Report 14 Dec 2011 00:19

We have searched our paperwork and we do not have a marriage certificate for Benjamin and Janey, but from somewhere we have the marriage date of 8/7/1905.
It is possible Benjamin made a mistake stating his father was a 'Mason' instead of a 'cloth finisher'.
I was wondering whether he had more to do with his grandfather (if it's the right one as John Haigh1817, "mason's labourer") and respected him, rather than his own father?
It is interesting with 65 Wellington St! Was it a large house and owned by the family, or rented? Did George's large family move in when Ellen was widowed, possibly in 1891, and she moved to 48 East St, Lindley? Are these streets close by?
It's frustrating being here in Oz and not being able to search personally!
That's all I think we can add for now.

Terence.

Hi Terence

Something isn't quite "adding up" and its worrying me !!!

If you do have the right birth cert. for your Benjamin then it says father John ---Cloth Finisher

If we have the correct 1881 census for Benjamin --John ect --then again John is a Finisher (W)

This is what is worrying me--
If you know for sure that Benjamin married Janey Isabella Chatburn then he states his father is John Haigh --MASON --dec

So I am wondering why he says his father was a Mason if he was a Cloth Finisher ? Do you think he made a mistake ?

Terence Report 12 Dec 2011 23:21

HI Barbara,
Benjamin Haigh's father John's occupation on the birth certificate is stated: "Cloth Finisher".
The 1881 census states: "Finisher (W)".
(We have a pile of paperwork for John;s father, also John b1817, mason's labourer. Which is in question until we get his son's marriage certificate).
Thank you for Nora's late marriage to Fred Robinson, with possible son Arthur, which we had not researched yet.

Thank you so much again.

Terence.
