Right.....I think I now know what you are trying to say................it wasn't by any means clear from your earlier posts

George born 1845 was iillegitimate.......and you think that his mother was the daughter of the man on the 1841 census.......and is the maternal line

Was the mother named ONLY as Elizabeth?

And....to repeat my earlier question.......do you have him on census records?

As you say, his naming of a father when he married is almost certainly a fabrication......to save 'face'

Another point you must take into account is that, until 1875, there were no penalties for not registering births.............so the 1845 cert may not be connected..........and the man who married in 1876 may not have had his birth registered

Yeah Ok Flick - re; George b1845 from his birth cert. - obviously we don't know the name of the father, but I assume he has taken his mother's name.
Obviously the George who died 1844 was Elizabeth Gepp's father.
I have George b1845's marriage cert. 25/12/1868 to Elizabeth Bouffler, both resident in Queen Street, Clerkenwell. His father IS mentioned - George Gepp, Coachman. Maybe that was bending the truth?! I had doubts that I had the right birth cert. for him, but I could not find anybody else that fitted.
I have researched my Grandfather and Great grandfather before researching George b1845, quite thoroughly and have documentation.
I will go through it all again in the near future and get back to you and all others who have contributed to the thread
Thanks to you all and Merry Christmas
Steve :-)

Have you researched the line from yourself back to 1845 with documents to prove every link?

Flick

Flick Report 19 Dec 2011 10:06

Sorry, but if his mother's name was GEPP, the chances of his father having the same surname must be miniscule

Name: George Gepp
Date of Registration: Jan-Feb-Mar 1845
Registration district: St George Hanover Square
Inferred County: London, Middlesex
Volume: 1
Page: 42

Also, if you think that the man who died in 1844 fathered an illegitimate child virtually on his deathbed, I think you are being somewhat unrealistic

Who is George (1845) living with on census returns?

Steven

Steven Report 19 Dec 2011 09:55

Hi Flick - thanks for all your work
Sorry for the confusion - I did, of course, mean earlier than 1845 (message typed early hours of the morning!)
I have a copy of the birth certificate of George Gepp b30/01/1845, his mother Elizabeth, but no father (duh!). Registered in St. George, Hanover Square, Mayfair. (cert ref: BXCD 642004/120)
I am 99.9% certain that he is my GG Grandfather.
Sorry will get back to you later - my living relatives require my attention right now!
Steve

Looking at the census records in general, the surname GEPP seems to be mainly an Essex name............

When you say 'later' than 1845.................do you actually mean 'earlier'? Just to avoid confusion.....................

What was the first name and birthplace of the man born c1845?

Are you 100% certain that the George you seek is your line? If he died, as you think, in 1844, he can't appear on a census with your great-grandfather

Thanks so much everyone
Sorry Wayne - I don't know how I managed to make two posts, except to say that the memory cells aren't as good as they once were!
How do I add an amendment to the first post and nudge it up?
Meantime I will work on what you have all given me - I have found it very difficult to find anything on the Gepp's later than my gg Grandfather b1845. So once again thanks
Steve :-)

Thanks, Flick, I just re-did work that was already done. Fortunately it wasn't much.

Interesting find Flick, altho not too many answers were found before.

Steven, you could have simply refreshed your original post and added 'still looking' to your title.

It's against the sites T&C's to duplicate a request, and it'll get peoples backs up if they redo work already done.

You'd be better off deleting this one and adding the amendment to your original post of Dec 10th and nudging it up the boards.

regards

Can anyone please help me find anything on George Gepp born about 1801.
I have details from the 1841 census living at 74 Eaton Place Mews, St. George, Hanover Sq, but would love something on his date and place of birth
Thanks in anticipation
