A friend of mine has a relative that they know had their coffin carried on a Gun Carriage in the 1920's.

Does anyone know why someone would specifically have been given this type of funeral rather than the normal hearse.

Thanks for any help

Sandra

Almost certainly because he served in the forces with distinction

How old was he?

Hello All,
I'm trying to find the date of birth and get a Birth Certificate for my Grandfather. He was born in or about 1875 in Lambeth, he is on the 1881 census and the 1891 census. He married my Granny in 1899 and died in 1928 and I have both the Marriage and Death Certs. I've been searching findmypast.com but cannot find anything concerning a Birth entry.
His name was Albert Gunnings Stevenson.
Incidentally, he was too old to go to fight in WW1. He worked as a carman (bus driver) for the London Omnibus Company (later London Transport), and so he and 59 other drivers volunteered to go out to France with their buses to take the troops up to the front line and to bring wounded and prisoners back. This is why a wreath is laid by London Transport on the Cenotaph every Remembrance Day. When he died in 1928 he was given a full military funeral on a gun carriage.

If you read through the entries you'll find that his birth was registered under the surname Gunning.

Although the person who posted on the other site said he was his/her grandfather but Hollyhock's friend just says a relative.

Flick

Flick Report 16 Dec 2011 14:53

That birth would probably be a grandson

It's also transcribed as just Stevenson

Yes, I have been told he did have a son called the same name.

Many thanks for all your help, I will pass this on.
