I haven't looked for John and Eliza's marriage yet though that marriage does look promising. John was born in Wantage and two of Caroline's children from her third marriage were registered in Wantage.

Thank you for finding some of her siblings christenings.

I have three marriages for Caroline in 1869, 1872 and 1875 however you are right it is possible that Caroline was not born Caroline. One of my great great grandfathers was born Henry then christened as John Henry and used Henry, John Henry and Harry which made him an interesting person to track.

JoonieCloonie Report 7 Jan 2016 19:54

on the possibility that she was really someone else's child reared by the Cripps couple as their own

these are the Carolines born in Newbury reg dist who could have been 1 yr old in the 1851 census

Births Jun 1849
Cooper Caroline Elizabeth Newbury 6 231
Hughes Caroline Newbury 6 229

Births Sep 1849
Rowles Caroline Lizard Newbury 6 207

Births Jun 1850
French Caroline Newbury 6 236
Thorn Caroline Newbury 6 221

Cooper, Hughes, Thorn and French (mistranscribed Franck and corrected at Ancestry) are in the 1851 census

I don't see Rowles, or see a death for her before the census or any other record

I wouldn't mind having a grx3 grmother named Caroline Lizard ... beats my Sarah Smith :-)

(Lizard is an exclusively Devon surname likely confined to one family)

these two Rowles children

Births Jun 1848
Rowles Frederick Newbury 6 211
Births Jun 1851
ROWLES Albert Newbury 6 231

the others born around the same time, are in the 1851 with parents William and Ann (Albert as 'infant')

there is a nurse present in their household ... a younger child could have been sent out

possibly that Caroline was their child and had died but the death wasn't registered

> just adding here to rule out

I have actually seen the names Charlotte and Caroline interchanged more than once

(like Edwin Edward Edmund, Eleanor Ellen, etc)

Births Jun 1850
Cripps Charlotte Newbury 6 236

BUT she appears with parents William and Ann in 1851

it was not unheard of for someone to be registered under one name and called another all their life, so I considered this one too

Births Dec 1849
CRIPPS Elizabeth Newbury 6 227

but she too is with parents in 1851

I just wanted to say thanks for returning to the old thread with all the info in it rather than starting a new one :-)

I've had a look and can't see her. Maybe she was just missed off the rest of the family?

There is a 'C C' at a school born 1849, but its miles away and place of birth is wrong.

I was wondering if anyone could possibly locate Caroline Cripps on the 1861 census?

I have now confirmed that the Caroline Cripps that Rose found on the 1851 census with parents John and Eliza is indeed my ggg grandmother.

I managed to locate John and Eliza on the 1861 census however Caroline was not with them and I wondered if anyone could find her?

You might want to start with Mary Ann's birth cert. to confirm Caroline's maiden is actually Cripps.

Hopefully yes it will. This started off as try to find four sets of missing ggg grandparents two hours ago. Three sets proved fairly easy to get info on to order certs to confirm. Caroline has deffinately been the most difficult although also the most interesting.

Obviously............

When you obtain one of her marriage certs, you'll have some factual info (hopefully) about her father

Tawny Report 27 Dec 2011 22:43

Thank you for finding that. Hannahs daughter Caroline is too young to be the right one.

Chaddleworth and Leckhampstead are right next to each other.

I think it's probably the Caroline Rose found in 1851. I can't find any of the births for Caroline or her siblings.
