I don't know if the fact that this is the 1861 index implies that he was still alive then?

Andrew

Andrew Report 8 Jan 2012 15:38

I've been working on this problem for years - I wonder if anyone can help me please?

My Gt Gt Grandfather, Thomes Noel (born c. 1825) was in the military. He served in India with the 60th Regiment, and married Elizabeth Leach at Jullundur, West Bengal, on 18/04/1853. According to the very basic records that I have been able to find online, they probably had 4 children:
John Henry Noel (b.1854 - Jullundur, Punjab, India) - my Gt Grandfather
Thomas Noel (b.1856 - Meerut, India)
Sarah Jane Noel (b.1858 - Meerut, India)
Charles Noel (1861 - Dover, Kent)
Now, things get rather messy following the Indian Uprising in 1857-8!

Firstly, I have been unable to locate any records to suggest that the parents or siblings died in the Uprising (indeed, one of my cousins is positive that they survived - unfortunately he carried out his research before the days of the internet, and is now of an age that gaining extra information is impossible). However, according to my dates, if Charles was born in Dover in 1861 it would imply that Elizabeth must have survived! There is no death record for her in the UK as a Noel. Was Charles illigitimate? But if his father was no longer in the miliitary, why was Charles registered as having been born into the 60th regiment under the same surname? Surely this implies that Thomas survived too?

From this point I know very little, but it is rumoured in family history that all the children were sent to Duke of York Schools. Why, if they were not orphaned? John Henry certainly did (Woolwich?), and I have found an intriguing entry in the 1871 census that shows Charles as a 'scholar' in 'an institution' in Chelsea. He vanishes again after this date - possible back into the military?

A trip to the Royal Green Jackets Museum in Winchester might supply a bit more information, but sadly a visit is out of the question anytime soon (I'm a full-time carer).

Any information or suggestions regarding the parents and the fate of their three missing children would be most appreciated.

With kind regards to all,
Andrew Gourlay.
